Members B-Bottom
I'm thinking of switching to drums for a new band project. I've been playing bass for around 18 years now and would really like to do something new. I'm not totally new to drums mind you, I've just never owned my own set. So I would like to know what is the best bang beginner set that can get the job done in a band. Thanks!

Members cearleywine
Thanks man. I am digging the Gretsch Catalina jazz kit. I'll have to check that out next time I am at GC I owned one for a while. Pretty great for the money. I bought mine used for $300. Basically any popular brand's intermediate kits with decent tuning will be fine. Avoid skimping on the cymbals though.
Members twosticks
make sure it has all the parts. Older Gretches are nice, Sonor 2003 or 3003 series, Yamaha Stage Custom, Tama Superstar or older Rockstar, StarClassics are really nice. Pearl Export or Visions, Ludwig Accent or Epics, PDP etc. Can also send us links or pics of what you're looking at and we can comment if you want. Going used is the way to go. Drums like many instruments lose half their value the minute they leave the music store, so is better to get a $1200 retail set USED for $500 (or even $700) than to pay $700 at GC for an entry level brand name set or $500 for generic (stencil) cheap made set. Members Bitter Dawn
Yamaha Stage Custom, Tama older Rockstar. +1 Had an early 90's Rockstar as my first kit and wanted another one for my second but, then I found a set of SC's for a steal and I dig 'em. Plus, since they were used I had enough to get a set of used AAX hats in great condition. The SC's came with some utter crap cymbals which, I ended up giving away to a less fortunate co-worker who drums but, for intermediate quality stuff the cost was just below $500 (Cnd).
