Members race81
I had to work this saturday....so at lunch I ventured to the 3 local pawn shops. At one shop I saw this vintage slingy set that caught my eye. It was a 7 piece set...chrome snare/black wrap bass drum/5 toms...some of them in white wrap and some in black wrap. The toms had lugs/heads/rims on top only. The bottom had no lugs/bearing edge or anything. the bottom of the toms had a aluminum edge around the outside of the bottoms to protect the wood Im guessing.....ive never seen any of these. they had them marked at 500..I thought that might be a little high. an interesting kit.....anyone have any info?????? Members Carminemw
From your description, it could be something like this from '79 Here are the other drums from '79 http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/slingerland_drumsets_1979.html and here are more catalogs from different years http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/slingerland.html
Members 6topher
A lot of companies made toms without bottom rims in the 70's - that dead sound was in. They don't command very much on the vintage market now, but from what I understand the bottom edges were cut and a lot of them have clean never touched bearing edges under the aluminum edge if you take them off & want to drill for lugs. 500 might be a little high, these type of kits sit from I have seen. Members danrothmusic
Sounds like it's mis-matched, too
Members kmart
Concert toms; ugh. Another thing to be concerned about is all those years with who knows what kind of stress & strain on them, the shells often are way out of round because of no bottom hoops. Members Carminemw
That's why they put those rings on them...you really should PM Dendy...he used to be with Slingerland!
Members race81
carm, yep, thats what the shells looked like....only in a mixture of black wrap..and a few in white. The bass drum had a tom mount though. there was no bearing edge on the bottom side. Just the aluminum ring. thanks...I just found them as very odd. Members kmart
That's why they put those rings on them... Yes, that is why. And they didn't help much, because they were not that solid/strong.
Members manoeuver
friend of mine in hi skool played some slingy concert toms. I really like the barky sound you can get out of them. they don't have to be dead either, put some clear ambs on em and crank em up!
