Members irnbru83
After the shenanigans with pins breaking in stands, I was checking out my old Pearl boom stand I use for my ride. It's getting a bit wobbly in it's old age, so I was looking at replacing it. My other two cymbal stands are Mapex, so I was curious about their boom stand options. B950A.jpgB750A.jpg Uh, any idea what the difference(s) between these two is(are)? Thanks in advance. EDIT: Also, anyone NOT a fan of the ball-joint, especially for heavy rides? Members kmart
I don't like ball-joint style tilters in general, and find them completely unnecessary on a boom stand like that where you can easily turn the boom arm, however I think that would not likely be a failure point unless you're hanging a massive/thick cymbal off of it at an extreme angle. Members zehn
Can't speak to the quality of the Mapex stuff, but I've used and abused the {censored} out of my Tama Roadpro hardware for a good 8 years now, and it's all still as solid as the day I bought it. Members kmart
I'll second a vote on durability of Tama hardware; I've got a couple Tama Titan STILT stands that have to be nearing 20 years in age in use.
Members irnbru83
I was initially just checking out Mapex hardware just for matching the rest of what I got, but I'm always down for changing it up if there is a significantly better brand of hardware in my price range. Thanks for the tip.

I have 2 of these stands, and a hi-hat stand from this line, and I love them. They have given me ZERO trouble, and are pretty light (easy to schlep)
Members irnbru83
Went home yesterday and realized one of my Mapex stands is a boom stand. Maybe I'll just get a regular cymbal stand then... Although, having 2 booms available probably isn't a bad thing. I've actually done most of my shows without any boom stands, now that I think about it. This new kit is the first one because my Pearl stand is boom-only. Hmm, now I'm all confused. Thanks for the responses though
Members kmart
Just food for thought: Now that everybody and their brother is making convertible boom stands (i.e., the boom arm can be lowered into the main tube resulting in a 'regular' straight stand), I personally will be unlikely to buy a straight stand (only) again. Sure, you'll spend a little more initially, but will have the option to use that stand however best suited moving forward.
Members lsits
I have a Gretsch Blackhawk straight stand wher the tilter is attached to the shaft with one of those pin thingees. I noticed that it was wobbling and that the pin was broken. I drilled out the pin with a small drill, cleaned up both pieces and attached them with JB Weld. Better than new!. Will probably last another 20 years or more. I hate to throw stuff out if I can repair it.
Members zildjian@consol
I too have used JB Weld to fix 2 different stands,it works
Members irnbru83
I have all the tools, materials, and experience to do the same (used JB Weld to repair a cracked oil pan), but I don't actually like the boom stand. It's the older style that is not a convertible, as kmart says. The way the polished boom is attached, I'm wary that it'll start to turn sideways on me when I don't want it to. My buddy's boom stand did that after years of use, so he wrapped that part of the boom in duct tape. Works, but looks like {censored}. I'll gladly sell this stand to someone else who wants to deal with it. I may even repair the wobbly pin first.
