Cheapest Non-DIY Octoban styles these days?

A few years back, I wanted some Octoban style drums, now the bug has bitten again, and I might have the means to get them. $$$ At the time, the Peace versions were the cheapest option, and I can still find the low set 20&22" for $200.

Now I know they have gotten popular again, and a lot of people are making them. Anyone know of any other budget brands that are making some? I figure there cant be much quality difference in Acrylic tubing. (Lets not start a Plastic Quality thread like the wood one!)

Danke!

I wasnt aware those were aluminum, I will have to see if I can check them out? Whats different about their sound?

I really love the low "thonk" that can be had, the old solos of Simon Phillips on the Drum Tips: Power Solos dvd was where I first heard, and fell in love with them.

I hate trying to describe sounds with words, but I think of the octobans as going "POK" while the quarter toms go "PONK". The aluminum gives them a bit more tone than the octo's.

I have a set of each on my kit at home. If you would like, I can send you a sound file of them and you can give them each the Pepsi challenge?

Thoughts?

Oh that would be awesome! You can email me at merlincoryell gmail. I assume you can compare similar lengths/tunings on the two materials?

Here's the rundown on the sizes I use. You'll see they're not identical. The heads are identical on all (Evans Gplus) and the tunings are similar.

Pearl Quarter Toms:

6x12, x15, x18, x21

Tama Octobons:

6x10.75, x11.5, x21, x23.5

Keep in mind that there are only 4 sizes of Pearl quarter toms but 8 sizes of octos. I prefer the "through the shell" mount of the quarter toms to the "clip style" mounts on the octos. You can also buy one, two, three or all four quarter toms. I believe the octos are still only sold as a high set of two, high set of four, low set of four, all eight. I'm guessing the DW are a set of 10. Don't know how many are in the Peace offering. I also think the Peace drums are 8" in diameter, not 6".
