Members Peekaboo Fuzzy
Has anyone A/B'd these two mics? They are both supposed to be great. The AKG is a bit pricier, not by much though. So who has fired these up and compared at various sound levels for lead vocals?
Members TimmyP
The AKG has perhaps a more revealing (of nuances) sound, but has more proximity effect to EQ out. I likely prefer the AKG. But: Much will depend on monitor and band levels, as well as house spill onto the stage - I've never used the AKG "in battle", so I cannot comment there. The 87 does pretty well, but I'd rather have an OM7 or a 767a - if there's a lot of stage/house wash, these mics will give me what I want with a lot less effort and worry. If I don't have the wash to worry about, give me an AE5400 or a PR22 (I've not yet heard the PR35). Bottom line - if it has to work every time because it's the only mic you have, the OM7 or 767a are the ticket for me. (I also hear good things about the 967 and the new PL80.) Members Peekaboo Fuzzy
Very informative run down on those TimmyP, thanks. I am by nature a light baritone, but due to a good amounf of training and practice I can sing well beyond my normal range. I'm looking for a condenser that I can use live and in the studio for around $200-$300 that will pick up a strong chest and mixed and pretty full head voice in a theatre/classical/rock style. It sounds like you have quite a bit of experience with mics; do you have any other recommendations in that price range for that voice type and stylistic criteria? Thanks!
