Pearl Jam

Growing up and getting into the drums, I loved Dave Abbruzzese's playing on Pearl Jam's Ten and Vs. I'd go so far as to say that Ten was one of my first favorite drum albums and much of my style was derived from that album.

So yeah, I learned today that Dave Abbruzzese didn't join Pearl Jam until after Ten was released. The drummer was a cat named Dave Krusen (who later played with Candlebox).

Once again, my youthful memories have been shattered when due to the available information on the Internet. Well, credit where due - Dave Krusen was a great drummer.

I can't be the only one this happened to - anyone else have shattered memories in the drum world when finding out someone wasn't the player on an album where you thought they were?

I could be a total troll and say "yeah, Bernard Purdie played on the Beatles' albums," but that's not how I roll. I feel like the truth of that will be discovered when I learn about the Loch Ness Monster, Bigfoot, and where Hoffa is.

How did you not know that?  I'm not, and never was, a PJ fan and I knew that.  It could be an age thing, and you may not have missed that bit of info when Dave talked about it in a MD interview in like 92-93.

In the world of rock and pop Fitch, it happens all the time. Not exactly in the regard of which you speak, but in the fact a particular bands drummer, (or other musician), can't cut it in the studio, and they bring in a ringer to do the tracks, and they are never credited with it. Obviously I'm not saying that's what happened in the case you're referring to, but it's amazing how many tunes and albums have players on them that go un-credited in an effort to keep the image of the band, intact. Part of the business of music, I'm afraid.

Kind of OT but this reminds me of a band from my home town of El Paso.  They were kind of a Journey/REO Speedwagon sounding band.  Back in the 80's they did an album of originals and hired a drummer to do the tracks since their drummer really wasn't very good.  BUT to make it sound like the original drummer they essentially told the studio guy to play bad.

So he did.

The album sucked.

When I was in grade school, I was into KISS, but more because of Gene Simmons. In Junior High is when I started wanting to be a drummer. The first drummer I knew by name was Peter Criss, was kinda disappointed years later when I learned the KISS album "Dynasty" ( I was made for lovin you)  was Anton Figg (of David Letteman fame) on drums and not Mr Criss. I just thought they practiced more and had better studios and recording by then??

Here's a Peal Jam fack I remember though. I run into a casual musician acquaintance at a bar and within a minute the conversation is,

"You like Pearl Jam?"

I'm like, " uh, na bad - I really like the drummer though ... "

The whole encounter takes a minute more and fades to black.

A couple days later while daydreaming about it, it occurs to me I was being hit on.

PEARL JAM

echh, eeoooh, duh

So there. Ignorance; shattered impressions; the harsh environment of the music business ....
