Members papa-karl
Hey, everybody!I've just finished my album (Melodic Death) with real male growls, but I still want to record some black metal vocals.I don't know how. What to do with the voice? I simple don't understand. I understood to growl agressively and deeply fat, but HOW does black metal vocals recording works? Members Dthraco
Read the question, but sorry bro, not a clue. That realm of vocals is difficult to understand/appreciate. And I just never got there.
Members LordBTY
Move over people! It's Tom's turn to shine For starters, it's an exhale scream. Or at least, I don't know of many people who do it an inhales. In case you don't know, exhale means your breathing outwords, not inwards. Basically, it requires you to close your throat really really tight and push air through it. I might make a video later. You know when you do sit ups? You get really tired and when you've finally had enough you go "eeeeeyyh". The idea is the false vocal cords that are directly above the real vocal cords The 'filth whistle', as some may call it is raspy screeching noise that is produce when your throat is pulled tight enough that it produces a pitch. Don't know if that explains it well enough. ---- TomMx
Members Syyle
does it do damage to the throat, TomMx?
Members LordBTY
Yes and no. From what I've read it alters your natural resonance. If you're a classical singer, don't do it. However, if you do it right without putting too much pressure on your throat (without it hurting) it should be fine. However, I'm only 17 - so I haven't used it much. I'm uploading a video of me onto youtube of me demonstrating the technique. Will be up in a mo. ---- TomMx

Members wikwox
INTERESTING! I use the "inward scream" for general noise making but for this method you can impart some pronunciation. Sorry, no black metal, just assorted rock and R&B.
Members papa-karl
Thanx to everyone. I'll try these methods, the ihnale one seems to me the simplest, but then i have to use more sensitive recording tools for it, and no "real" wordspeaking comes out. Can't believe that the profs scream like wild all the gig round. I guess there has to be some "feature". Growl is much simpler: practice - record. Inhales are much worse for you than exhales Since inhales put more tension on the throat than exhales ---- TomMx
Members Hell
Thanks for that video, Tom. I'm always interested in new vocal techniques. I know it's hard to explain things like this but you did a good job conveying it here.

Members Koreanism
Hi I am new to the forums, was searching in google about the filth whistle and came across this thread. I am really interested in the video put up by Lord BTY, could you do another video please? I am trying to understand how it works. I believe it stems from normal screaming, like the kind a girl or young could achieve but I think, guys lose it as they grow older. K. Thanks(:
