Hi, I'm looking for some software or effect that can change the key of a backing track. Im actually a guitar player and have some songs to learn by ear and the singer wants to play them all in different keys to the originals that I have on CD. They are jazz songs and I don't have any chord charts so am learning by ear. All ideas gratefully received. Help!

Hi Andy,

Here's some software that changes keys for you in either wav or mp3, which should be all you need to cover the bases of key changes and saving or duplicating in mp3 or Cd.

http://www.bestshareware.net/mp3-keyshifter.htm

Also google this phrase, of something like it and get a million + hits:

change keys of your backing tracks software

However if you are a guitar player , it's time to learn how to transpose keys.

If you are learning by ear, it makes little difference what key you learn it in(by ear), you should be able to learn a song regardless of what key it's in,assuming there aren't medical issues barring you from learning certain keys...

Picking out the chords, (especially jazz) is your challenge , the transposition is a cakewalk, compared to picking out chords.

Also, check out the Guitar Forum for further help....

Best of luck with it.

I've used a program called "Riffster". It's pretty simple and basic. It allows you to change the key of the song without changing the speed. You can also change the speed without changing the key/pitch. There is also the ability to quickly and easily set loop. It's a great tool for learning tunes, especially solos.

I don't think it's free, but I know it's really cheap. If I recall, under $30. Just Google it, and check it out. I think they have a trial download, but I don't remember exactly.

Good luck.

If you're using WinAmp (free audio player) there is a free plug in called "Pacemaker" which has three sliders....

... one changes pitch without affecting tempo, one is tempo without affecting pitch, and the other changes both at the same time (like the normal speeding up, slowing down, of an album).

Transcribe! is an inexpensive program that is feature rich for your purposes and it's great for guitarists, including key changes, EQ settings to bring out instruments, cancel vocals; looping; It displays a frequency spectrum of the notes played within a highlighted section (great for jazz chords). Good luck.
