Are you guys heard about this site?

Check them out, I'd like to have your input!

Slicethepie is a financing platform for the music industry that enables new and established Artists to raise money directly from Music Fans and Investors.

On Slicethepie, Music Fans take on the A&R role, earning money reviewing tracks, spotting new talent and ensuring the best Artists get put forward for financing.

Music Fans can then directly invest in the Artists in return for exclusive Artist access, a copy of the completed album, their name on the album sleeve and a decent share in the financial returns from album and single sales.

Investors (non-US only) can trade in and out of their Artist Investments at any time on the world’s first Music Trading Exchange, also hosted on the site.

The first time I heard of this, Jim Hall's manager did it. Took investment from Jim's fans and associates to be part of the process. They got exclusive webcasts of the recording process, personal messages and correspondance, and private web only performances. And of course, a cd and a dvd. And he has successfully done it with I think, 2 albums. These albums are not available to the general public.

Problem is, it pissed off the jazz labels and he can't get even a one record jazz deal. And jazz deals are scrimpy. And it is JIM FOOKIN" HALL.

And this was heard via musician chit chat....so take it for what it is worth. Don't have time to fact check it. Too busy posting on HC.....:p

Jim Hall's approach was narrowed down and although it succeeded, in the long run, it did work against him. Releasing the material on a 'vanity label' would have been possible; just based on his name he could have landed some distribution to retailers, but from what you are saying, that didn't happen.

Here's what I would be curious about in the 'slice the pie' configuration: Who has control of the cash flow, and what is the ROI is for the investors? What kind of investment is that? And why in god's name would you make the distribution exclusive only to the investors? Where is the value in that? Why have all these potential reviwers if the recording is never going anywhere? Wouldn't it make more sense to try to get some kind of distribution deal? Otherwise, basically, this is a work for hire or 'vanity press' approach. What does this get for the artist, ultimately? A CD that only 75 people will ever hear?

Sounds odd. Interesting to ponder though. I'd agree that having limitless distribution is smarter for the longhaul. Not to mention getting blacklisted certainly isn't something you'd want to wish on yourself.

Perhaps there are certain aspects that could be taken away from this model and worked. There's always a silver lining.
