Members ajcoholic Posted May 12, 2006 Members Share Posted May 12, 2006 Been playing a B&H Sovereign in a true British brass band since I was about 11 or 12 (I am 35 now). Our band leader (also a euph player) came to Canada from Ireland in the 60's and started up the band. I love the euph, its such a great instrument - a super range, great dynamic range as well, and with the sweetest tone of all the brass instruments in my opinion... Members ajcoholic Posted May 13, 2006 Members Share Posted May 13, 2006 The Euph is considered more like a baritone I think in the symphonic bands and in North America in general, VS in a British brass band where it is a key instrument. In the brass band, the solo coronets & euphs pretty much get the major melodic parts of many pieces (with tenor horns and trombones in after that). There are so many wonderfull pieces of brass music written for the euponium - Black Dyke MIlls band being one of my favourite BB's to listen to. Its always been funny, playing in a brass band and also playing rock music on guitar since I was a kid. I actually got into the brass band since I already read music well (I was taking classical lessons as a kid) and the euphonium parts in a BB are written in treble cleff as well. Our band leader found a piece of music for brass band a guitar and we are going to try it next season. Members thenagus Posted May 14, 2006 Members Share Posted May 14, 2006 A few months ago I saw a (trad)jazz group (Can't remember who they were), and thier trombone player had a Euphonium which he played in just one piece. Can't remember what it was - it may have been "In a sentimental mood". Something slow and balady like that. Anyhow, this piece was his big solo item, and I was totally blown away by the tone. It was beautiful! Only time I've ever really seen a Euph used for jazz. Guess it might not cut through well enough as a background instruments in faster pieces, but for solo-work in slower mroe sentimental pieces, it sounds perfect! really sweet mellow tone. Members soundministries Posted May 15, 2006 Members Share Posted May 15, 2006 Hoping to buy a Besson Prestige within the next year. The real pretty silver one with all the gold accents. A guy I play with in a brass band has stopped using his Prestige in favor of his old Boosey Imperial and may be willing to part with it. If he does, oh baby. If he decides to keep it then I'll pick up the bass trombone this year and wait for a good deal on another Prestige.
