I have recently started dj'ing. Buying the right equipment and putting it together has been a challenge. I have had advice from other dj's. Here is what I have right now... Two JBL eon 1500 passive main speakers, JBL JRX 118 passive subwoofer, Crown XLS 402 amp for the main speakers, GLI pro 2500 watt amp for the sub, Behringer CX 2300 Super X Over Rack Crossover. Numark two channel mixer. I'm using a laptop and cd player for the music inputs. My question is....how should I connect the crossover into the system and what settings are best to use on the crossover. Once I recieved the crossover and looked at the controls...well I was a bit overwhelmed. Any help in the matter would be appreciated greatly.

Sincerely,

Jim

Welcome to the craft.

The Eons are 8 ohm, 225w avg/ 900w peak. The Crown XLS402 puts out 300w @ 8ohms.

This should work well provided you don't drive the amp into clipping. This aka "redlining the mixer" in DJ speak. If anything at all, back off on the amp gains a little and try to keep the mixer output levels at 0dB max, occasional peaks up to +3dB are OK but that's all she wrote.

The subwoofer is 4 ohm, 350 watts. This is where you should be careful. Under any circumstances, DO NOT BRIDGE THE AMP unless you want to destroy your gear in a hurry. According to JBL:

Recommended Amplifier Power: 350 watts to 700 watts into 4 ohms

Just run one channel of the amp into the sub. That's all you need. When you get another JRX118, run the other channel into it.

Now, on to the crossover...

Your set-up should be something like this:

CAUTION: ALWAYS START WITH EVERYTHING SWITCHED OFF. MIXER CHANNEL AND MASTER LEVELS ALL THE WAY DOWN.

Set the crossover for 2 way stereo operation. There should be a switch or button for this. If not refer to the manual.

NUMARK MIXER (L) ==> CROSSOVER INPUT (L)

NUMARK MIXER ® ==> CROSSOVER INPUT ®

CROSSOVER HIGH OUT (L) ===> CROWN XLS402 (L)

CROSSOVER HIGH OUT ® ===> CROWN XLS402 ®

If there is a mono low/subwoofer switch for the crossover,

CROSSOVER LOW OUT (MONO) ===> one channel of GLI AMP

Set the gain for input, high output and low output signals at 0dB (usually 12 o'clock)

TURN THE MIXER ON, THEN CROSSOVER, THEN AMPS.

PUT MUSIC ON AND SLOWLY TURN UP THE LEVELS.

Recommended Crossover Settings: 30 Hz HPF, 24 dB / octave; 80 - 100 Hz LPF, 24 dB / octave

The above is what JBL recommends for the JRX118. It would be best to start at something like 150Hz, slowly turn the frequency knob to about 100-120Hz. Always remember, the sub can take the low frequencies all night but the tops can't so leaving it around 100Hz should give you optimum performance.
