I can hit notes, but I can't carry a tune.

So I took lessons for around 6 months but my Mom canceled them due to cost so I've been teaching myself lately. The problem I have is that I can hit any note within my range (I'm a tenor with a range of around B3-E5) but when it comes to singing a song with piano or guitar, well I suck. I have no idea why because it's not a problem for me to hit most of the notes and I KNOW I'm not hitting them right during a song. I have no idea how to fix this. Some advice please? Thanks :)

Learn Solfege so that you can sing acapella.

Also, I'm guessing that the piano and guitar are not playing the melody.

Singing the vocal melody over instruments takes time.

If there was a piano playing the vocal melody, I'm sure you could hit all the notes.

But unfortunately, that's not how most music is written these days.

So my advice is learn to play an instrument (preferably piano, but guitar is OK)

and learn to play the vocal melody. Then sing along while playing.

If you can't play an instrument, you can use computer software to write out the sheet music

and sing along with it. I use MuseScore.

I've played guitar for 5 years and piano for 2, so I'm set on the instruments. I've noticed that I do hit the notes correctly when playing the melody alone, although the problem is I've not trained my ear extensively (I can learn guitar by ear to an extent, but piano not so much.) I know when I hit my notes and when I don't. I also know if I'm flat or sharp most of the time. The only problem for me is to actually find the vocal melody someone is singing, mainly due to my ear not being trained that well. What I end up doing is singing along with the song and then hitting notes on the piano, but that can be really time consuming. I also suck at reading sheet music (I've learned everything on piano by youtube videos and knowledge of scales I've learned from guitar.) but if I can get the sheet music I can figure out the vocal melody with time. If anyone knows where I can get free sheet music that'd be amazing. For example, I know the melody for Hallelujah and I can usually hit the notes perfectly. Also, can you give me songs that would be easy for me to sing as a beginning tenor? I prefer songs on the lower-mid side of my range if that helps. Is there also a good way to begin solfège? I'm clueless was to where to start. Thanks! :)

For ear training, you can use this book:

http://www.amazon.com/Ear-Training-Contemporary-Musician-Elliott/dp/0793581931/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1343022996&sr=8-1&keywords=ear+training+for+the+contemporary+musician

You can also try http://www.amazon.com/Sightsinging-Complete-Musicians-Institute-Essential/dp/0793581915/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1343023365&sr=1-1&keywords=sightsinging

As far as ear training software, there is "EarMaster Pro".

For Solfege, there is "GNU Solfege".

For Apple iOS, i'm sure there gotta be a ton of solfege/ear training apps.

Free classical scores can be found here:

For modern music, go to www.musicnotes.com.

You have to pay for the scores.
