Members staticsound
Just put up a new tutorial on singing gritty and distorted. If anybody's interested, give it a watch. [video=youtube;1t3M0KCS9iU]
Members Masklin
Good video Derek! The most interesting part for me is when you explain what to visualize in order to get that gritty stuff into your soft palette-ish area. Because that's really hard. It's just like mongolian throat singing, kargyraa style. I've been struggling with it for years, but haven't found it yet. So what I'm asking I guess is, are there more ways of approaching it, apart from being a mullet?

Members Masklin
I have no idea. Let me try again. Apart from sounding like a muffler, how do I activate the grittily grit-grit-grittidy?

Before you can do it, staticsound needs to teach you how to Dougie :-)

Its hard....took me about 3 years to be able to do it right. If you can get the initial "muffler" sensation down....you are well on your way. Members staticsound
Damn, she can certainly wail! All grit comes from the same place...you can vary the amount of "effect" by how much downward support you use. She almost has a bluesy grit to her voice in spots. I'm not very good at it, but from what I've read, blues grit is done by maintaining a raised larynx ( Kermit the Frog ) type sound, and then adding in the grit. Kinda like the grit Christina Aguilera uses...or Louis Armstrong.

Members chamcham
I always thought Louis Armstrong's grittiness was from greasy cheeseburgers, french fries, and weed According to http://www.veryimportantpotheads.com/armstrong.htm, "Louis Armstrong was first turned onto marijuana in the mid-1920s, and he smoked it all his life, including before performances and recordings." Members staticsound
Nice link I think with Aguilera, it was more of a learned technique...while some of the great blues singers, it was in them from the beginning. Suffering, oppression, pain, drugs, probably all contributed to that blues sound.
