Freaking out a little

Friends just asked me to come along with them to sing live on the radio tonight, involving an a cappella solo. (Promoting a folk music festival.) I know the piece cold, but I'm still nervous about it!

Does anyone have suggestions for dealing with nerves? I'm trying to keep myself busy with other stuff today so I don't dwell on it too much...

1. Practice slow deep breathing

2. Remember that fear never killed anyone

3. Embrace your fear: Don't push it away but rather turn toward it. Fear is a powerful force that can be used to make your performance vibrant and engaging.

Agree with all of this!!

Whatever the outcome, try to get someone to record it for you.

Then look back at the recording and see how you can improve.

This will probably give you confidence and motivation for the next time you sing on the radio.

Since it's your first time, just use it as a learning experience.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions, I appreciate it.

As it turned out, when I got there my friends informed me that they'd decided that they wanted me to sing something else than what I'd been told and prepared for, a piece I haven't performed in months.(!) Fortunately, I also know that one cold, ran through it a couple of times in the lobby, and then we were on. In some ways, I think the change-up helped, it distracted me from being nervous by givinge me something to focus on. Not sure I'd recommend it as a regular thing, though.

I think my friend came through getting it recorded, hopefully, I'll find out later this week how it sounded. However, it felt good while I was singing, I could just feel that I was right in that sweet spot, and the people I was with as well as the radio show host told me it was good (in fact she went out of her way to say it), so I'm happy with the outcome. And damn happy to have had the opportunity in the first place.
