Members singergirl246
I'm thinking about auditioning for American Idol in a few weeks and I'm kinda stuck on song choices. I need to prepare at least 3 songs. I'm thinking about doing "Natural Woman" by Aretha Franklin but I'm not sure what to do for the other 2 songs. They need to be different genres as well. Here's a sample of my voice. Please help me with suggestions! Thanks!! So most of you have already heard me sing but here's some samples just in case. Song suggestions are very much appreciated because I'm totally lost.
Members grace_slick
Natural Woman...to do that one, you'd need to do it INCREDIBLY well...to differentiate yourself from everyone else who will no doubt do it, and who has done it before... Yes, your voice is definitely impressive...but...Natural Woman...I don't know... Why do you need 3 songs? I thought they only let you do 1 song...or are there earlier auditions to the ones they show on TV? Also, you'd need to polish those "you" notes...the belting ones on the chorus...they're a little shaky. I'm only saying that because otherwise it's really, really good, so I can afford to be a bit picky. lol Your voice, also, is quite similar to several other people who will be auditioning...the good singers, the sort of "belter" type girls...you'd be one of the better ones though, I'd say... There're the other belting type songs by people like Whitney Houston, Christina Aguilera, etc...but I don't know if that might be a bit too obvious... Hmm...what kinds of songs do you like singing in everyday life and that you know well enough to pull off impressively in a nervous setting like an Idol audition? Moderators davie Posted July 8, 2011 Moderators Share Posted July 8, 2011 Almost anything by Celine Dion would be a good choice. In a lot of her songs, the voice stands out nicely and doesn't rely too much on instrumentals. Her songs also allow you to demonstrate a wide array of vocal colors and will stretch your vocal range just enough to keep the performance exciting, yet without "over-singing" too much. Members grace_slick
Celine Dion, eh? Hmm. I'm trying to think of songs the judges won't have heard a billion times before and that won't sort of...give the impression (which the OP may or may not want, depending on what kind of artist she wants to be) that she's sort of...old fashioned or lame or anything...cause to a lot of people these days, although her voice is great, Celine Dion = tres lame. lol
Moderators davie Posted July 8, 2011 Moderators Share Posted July 8, 2011 I also thought about Pink, Shakira and Beyonce, but their vocal arrangements aren't that interesting. I would like something from Alicia Keys maybe.
Members grace_slick
Alicia Keys, that could be good. Depends though...everyone's done Falling...and the other one, about diamond rings. I love the Empire State of Mind one she sings...not sure how the verse could sound though...but then the big chorus could blow everyone away...maybe? Pink...meh. I don't think that'd show off the OP's voice that much...Shakira...not sure about that one...Beyonce could be good, but yeah, the arrangements aren't that interesting. There's the old songs that maybe nobody auditioning for Idol would even know anymore, like All By Myself...that's a belting type song if you want it...Celine did that one actually, didn't she? Hmm. Or a Heart song...or Grace Slick's White Rabbit...yeah. lol
Members staticsound
My only advice would be to not do the same tired {censored} everybody else always auditions with. Or a Heart song...or Grace Slick's White Rabbit...yeah. lol Barracuda!
Members grace_slick
LOL yeah!!! But do it WELL. lol
Moderators davie Posted July 8, 2011 Moderators Share Posted July 8, 2011 A bold move, yet rewarding would be to do a more retro song. Like Heart or others. If you can manage to freshen up the sound, then that will display your creative side. Definitely a plus.
Members grace_slick
YEAH...refreshing and UNIQUE. Unique is IT. Or in Australia it is, anyway...we're big right now (and have been for a few years) on really different, unique and organic music and natural understated but charismatic talent. No over the top wannabes.
Members singergirl246
Thanks! There's three rounds of auditions for the producers before you see the actual judges and they require you to have 3 songs prepared and they want three different genres to show you have range. So that's why I need your guys help! I'm really comfortable with Natural Woman and I've been practicing it a lot and I've gotten a lot better since the recording. But for my other two songs I still want to show that I have a good range but maybe not as belty as Natural Woman because I have to show diversity. Members theminpoes
You're good Those are solid choices of songs, as long as you can pull the them off. I haven't heard of the Allison Krauss song, but I'm sure you can sing that solidly.
Members staticsound
I honestly don't get Idol...I understand that people want to be on it, but how many seasons is this now? The only 2 people that come to mind that have had any sort of mainstream success were Kelly Clarkson and Chris Daughtry...and he didn't even win. The judges suck, Jennifer Lopez, seriously?! They aren't looking for the next Idol, it's all about ratings and the networks making $$$ now...and space aliens

Don't sing songs that have been done a billion times before, although now that I think of it only Randy would even notice or say anything since Simon is gone. The thing is...you will be compared to the "great" Aretha and well, while you sing pretty darn good I'm not sure you can hit those high notes she can/did. They will critique you based on how many octaves you had to lower the song and judge you on it. If I were you I'd aim high, but don't get your feelings hurt no matter what is said. Stay positive. Members grace_slick
What about What’s Up by Four Non-Blondes? That’s a belty song but it’s more…adult than a lot of the ones every girl does on the Idol shows.
Members jvardon
You could go with show tunes, Le Jazz Hot from Victor/Victoria. Would really show off a large vocal range if that's something you'd like to display.
