all you guys over here idolize chris cornell. i can't stand him, or for that matter, I don't like soundgarden or the cornell solo stuff.

his timbre to me sounds whiny/cry-y, even in the lower registers. his lyrics are nothing special, and i dont like his look.

so what's he do up when he's hanging out up there? headvoice?

He screams with some chest voice to make the

distinction its not head voice.

I can do the same thing as he does (to a certain point of course)

but that's way way up there.

He's got a deep voice but can sing very high.

This is why I "like" his voice (not love it)

When I said he's in a league of his own its true.

Who else can sing that high.

Who else would want to? (I don't know) the answer

but he can do it. So it makes him a bit rare in terms of ability.

Thing about Chris is he's got a very unique voice. He's by far one of MY favorite singers. Not saying I like all of his stuff...*cough* Audioslave...

Not many people can go from an A2 and then nail an F5. Grant it, if your about "proper technique" his style is somewhat damaging, but that's what makes him unique. Dude's what, in his forty's now...and can still hit the high stuff. A lot cleaner than in the early days too IMO. My philosophy is you don't have to like a singer, but as an artist, respect what they are able to do with their talent. I'll probably get blasted for this, but I'm not really a fan of The Beatles, but I respect what they did and accomplished...just sayin

I enjoy the sound of his voice around the time of Superunknown ("Black Hole Sun"). He seems to be in good control on that album and is singing in a range that sounds comfortable. From that album I can see his appeal.

I find his early work screechy and off-pitch. Some people worship his singing on "Hunger Strike" by Temple Of The Dog. I find it both unbearable and even comically ludicrous. Sorry but that's my opinion. He's reaching for high notes that he can't actually achieve.

More recent work that I've heard shows signs of damage to his voice. He's on the road to becoming the next Tom Waits. I have read that he's wildly inconsistent as a live performer.

I think he had/has potential but he needs to pay more attention to what he's capable of and get some training IMHO.

Chris is inconsistant live, I've seen it...nowadays not so much. Over the years, he has damaged his voice, but IMO today, sounds better than he did in the early years. As far as Temple of the Dog stuff, he's nailing every note...the high notes aren't out of his range. If you listen to "Say Hello to Heaven", he nails the end...I believe it's either an F#5 or E5 he's nailing...pure head tone, no screaming. Hands down, one of the most talented singers that came out of the 90's. I agree that the "Superunknown" album was probably more "commercially" pleasing, Temple of the Dog is by far my fav Cornell material. But of course, different strokes for different folks. You don't like it, listen to something else

He is one of the pre-eminent rock "screamers" of the past 20 years... while I like him overall, I find him hit or miss... I could see where a voice like his would be hit or miss live. Ian Astbury has similar problems.

This will be contentious with the 20-30 somethings no doubt, but Soundgarden was one of the few good bands of the 90's IMO.

But to compare him to Freddie Mercury is absurd.
