Wow - You have 57 songs already on this page alone ! You're doing great!

Edelweiss - This is a classic tune, not something most people would consider recording. Good choice - nice to hear this. The two parts compliment each other and don't seem to tread on each other which can happen when you mix two leads together. Performance is as always, magical!

I recall reading you couldn't find your chest voice? The low part sounds like chest voice. Actually both parts do kinda...youmust have benn joshing.

Listened to both songs. and ALSO HALO!! lol

Your Halo is a lot better than that girl's.

And yes, ido1957 is right. You do have a "chest" voice. The verses from Halo perfectly shows that. Your voice isn't pure head voice (like some sorta choir girl), but definitely has a good "mixed" voice sound. I've listened to a few of your other songs before as well. You have one of those... timeless type of voices, it gives a somewhat nostalgic feel and also somewhat indie feel.

btw, the goat herd song with the yodeling and all. this is a funny coincidence, I've been practicing yodeling in the shower. lol i dunno why

Thanks!! I'm still not sure about chest voice. It feels as if I'm always just singing from my throat / head, never any chest area. Even the low parts in Edelweis don't feel chest-related.

Anyway...and I didn't actually want any comparisons to the other version of Halo on here...that's why I didn't put it in a new thread. I don't think it's any better than the other one...just different. And I also used different tracks on mine cause the chorus overlaps itself and the end of the verses, and it didn't sound good trying to do it all in one go. The other version on here did it all at once, and it's more difficult that way.

Grace, I'm curious, are you working towards any particular goal?

Because I've already commented that you have pro-level chops... and so I don't really feel at all compelled to listen to any additional tracks.

Others may still want to do so, but without context (e.g. "I want to be the next Christina Aguilera") it's hard to know what to say at this point.

Oh, ok! I getcha.

Well, basically I want to put out an album of songs...my partner and I make music in our little home studio...she plays the guitar, and I don't really do anything but I do everything else, if that makes sense. lol She doesn't sing, I do. She can't play the keyboards and neither can I, but I do it anyway, just by ear and by layering tracks over each other when recording...I do all the percussion stuff, the bass lines, the drums, using the keyboard and my recording software...

Her style of songs is more Nick Drake, Lindsey Buckingham / Fleetwood Mac...sort of nice acoustic earthy fingerpicking guitar sounds...

My style is piano-based and more like...Regina Spektor and others like her who people may not really have heard much of, and I also have some Fleetwood Mac / Jefferson Airplane / Frank Zappa sort of sounds going on...I have some weird ideas...

So yes. So really, technically I know that where I'm at now vocally, I can do what I want re the above. I don't need to have the perfect voice to do that. I just need to develop my own personality in the voice and get on with actually writing the songs I want to write.

But then on the other hand (and why I'm still here putting clips on for feedback and comment), I want to do some live stuff with my partner...just simple her on guitar, me singing...busking, etc...but I don't feel confident in my voice LIVE (no slight reverb, no total control over everything I record and hear back BEFORE anyone else hears it in case there's stuff I don't like), and this is why I want to get better in the ways and things I HATE about my voice...before anyone else hears that stuff I don't like or can't do...

Well, I like to leave it open! Comments of all kinds. I don't really like to ask, like...

- Am I improving?

- What could I do better?

- What annoys you about my voice?

- What are my consistent shortcomings?

BLAH lol

This is probably going to piss you off, but I'm gonna state the facts as I see them.

Here's why I don't comment on your threads more, although you know I have in the past:

You are definitely one of the best, if not the best singer I've listened to on this forum. Yet, you are insecure about your abilities. I think you probably have a bit of stage fright as well.

These are both things that you need to get over in your head. We are not going to be able to convince you otherwise. You have to learn to love your voice--all of it, and use it like the instrumental gift that it is. You can't rely on other singers to pump your self-confidence. So far as I can tell, 95% of the comments about your singing have been accolades, yet, you just can't hear them. This is all you, Grace. It's time to step up to the plate and show it to a real audience, not just your peers.

:poke:

No, your {censored}'s not perfect. But it is pretty f'in' close. Good luck to you.

I like that comment. I know it's 100% true. I just couldn't bear to take the plunge and then get hideous negative feedback or people booing me or something...

Eh, you just have to depersonalize that stuff.

Create an alter ego. She's on stage, not you. It might help to actually use a stage name.

She either kills or dies, and afterwards, you can joke and laugh about it either way. If she dies too many times, oh well, no more alter ego, and you just go back to doing whatever you were doing before.

Also, consider starting small. I'm planning to go to open mic nights and sit in with other bands, as I am starting out. Then build from there.

Yeah, I’d definitely have to de-personalise it…I can’t be ME on stage or in public if I’m performing and people are looking at me or listening to me. I’m kinda shy…sort of. A mix between shy and quiet and kind of aloof but also at times really outgoing and “out there” and even bordering on rude…I’m like a less eccentric Lady Gaga trapped inside a meek singer’s body. Lol.

I’ve already decided on my stage name. lol.

We don’t have open mic nights around here…there are cafes that have people come and play, but they have to be established on the local “scene” first. They never let unknowns do it. I also thought of karaoke, but they don’t really have typical karaoke places here either…there’s no stage or anything. It’s all private booths you have to book out and they cost about $200 for a couple of hours.

Our best bet is to try busking…there are 3 areas around here where people can busk, but you have to wait until certain times of the year to audition for the local council, and if they like you, you pay $80 and then you’re allowed to busk for the next 3 months, twice a week but only for one hour per day. I find this somewhat restrictive and strange, don’t you? Would we even make back our $80 investment in that limited time?

One particular place they’ve only recently made a busking zone is this big shopping mall, and well…ALL the buskers there that we’ve seen are not very good. Not to be rude, but they’re just…bad. We suppose the audition panel may be deaf or just not care, but one is this pair of girls…one plays the guitar, VERY basic strumming, and the other sings…but you can barely hear her singing and her voice is dull and hesitant. Another is this guy who plays his own songs and they are BORING. They drone on and on and on…then there’s another guy who plays the harmonica and guitar, and he’s alright but nothing amazing. Then there’s this 12 year old boy who plays the flute but nothing else. He’s not the best at it, but he’s just a kid. And we always make an effort to walk past and see how much money has been put into their guitar cases or whatever, and there’s never much there. Maybe a total of $10 or something.

And so we kind of alternative between daydreaming about doing this, thinking we’d be better than these people, but then fearing we’d suck and nobody would like us and we’d be totally embarrassed.

My partner is worried about her guitar skills. She plays WAY better than everyone we’ve heard busking, but she’s not 100% automatic with her playing, so she makes mistakes fairly regularly, and I know she would if she was nervous. She’s good but not consistent yet.

My concerns are that ALL the buskers seem to have incredibly bad PA systems. (you have to supply your own equipment) The instruments are ok but sometimes too quiet to be heard, but the voices are always incredibly muffled. I don’t want to sound like that! I NEED to be able to hear myself properly, and I want to be clear. Also we don’t HAVE any PA equipment…we have home recording stuff, but not the bigger monitor speakers the buskers have and all that. We are very much broke and so can’t afford to buy this stuff.

BLAH BLAH BLAH…there’s a lot of reasons we haven’t done anything like this yet.

Confession: I love the Sound of Music.

The Edleweiss song is my favorite one:facepalm:

I listened to both and I was like wow!

You can go deep and then you surprised me with singing

the other one just as fast paced without missing a breathe!

Do you think we could listen to you sing the first one

an octave up from the one you started at?

Really sounded nice Grace!

I'm trying to try new stuff as well.

I'm wanting to sing more fast paced songs and Rock...

We'll see how that goes:facepalm::wave:

Wait a min...the first one an octave up from where I started at? You mean instead of singing the deep man's part and then doing the harmony bit as the girl (Leisel - spelling?), you want me to do the man's part in the same octave I did the girl's part, and then do the girl's harmony part an octave higher? Eeep. Ok! I'll give it a whirl tomorrow! lol

Maybe I'm crazy, I didn't say it right.

I loved every bit of it, so its not that...

Maybe like a harmony of the first part.

That song gets me every time though.

I have new gear/instruments so I tried to do some different

stuff. Please have a listen:thu:

Meh, now I'm confused. LOL I just kinda did what the original song sounds like I thought. (I think you explained yourself just fine. I'm a little slow, that's all. LOL)

Oh, and have you had a listen to anything else on my Soundclick thingo? What'd ya think of O Holy Night, by chance? I tried to not use as much of that non-bass falsetto thing I automatically tend to do...

I didn't check that one out (yet) but I will definitely do that pronto!

Do you have a thread of it here?

Edit: Dayum, it's so sweet, fallllll on your knees, then the next parts

are so dang good! I think a few times you do the fast vibrato thing

on harder parts but I think it adds credibility to your performance, not a complaint on my end per se, if you know what I mean.:)

I love the high parts on the end of the song:love:

Just angelically beautiful.

I don't seen any glaring issues with your recording.

Your voice doesn't even need "pro" sounding gear from what I hear,

just the hissing noise is what I hear in the background...

Oh btw do you have means to do some sort of video chat?

We could do one, then I could help you out with the mic issue you

said you're having.

More than likely we can fix the issue easy.

If not more gain may be needed however you should be able

(from within your recording software) to boost the input signal

in this case your mic's signal...:)
