Who Uses The Vocalist Live 2 or 4

I'm not the best singer or player and know I won't make millions doing it now but after an accident some years back I'm just happy to be able to strum nowdays. I picked up a Digitech Vocalist Live4 to add some harmonies and was wondering who else uses one. Here's a sample I did, it's a take-off on a Dr. Hook song because I favor Martins. Don't be too mean to me...

Excellent - love the rework on the words! Good vocals - you got those low notes and the high ones too. The effects sound really good in most spots. There's times when the decay is too long or loud and sounds like an organ/synth almost. But the average listener wouldn't notice it. It's oviously a quality product that can really enhance....

I wanted to add a postscript here.

This weekend I did a casual gig by the side of a lake in the Southern Califorina mountains. The guy who hired me sings and plays guitar, saxophone, flute and clarinet. He does all of them really well (except maybe the singing, which is pretty mediocre).

But the thing that got me is that he uses a Digitech VL2 ALL THE TIME!

And I mean all the time: vocals, sax solos, you name it. I tried to tell him that the harmonizer is a great effect if used sparingly, but he wouldn't listen. It makes his performance, which could be really effective, sound terribly cheesy. The weirdest part is that when he plays the sax, flute, or clarinet through it, he isn't playing guitar at the same time (obviously) so the harmony voices are going with whatever last guitar chord he played, which may or may not be right for the song he's currently playing.

My point here is that the vocal harmonizer is a great effect. It can make one singer sound like more than one singer, or one horn sound like more than one horn, but it has to be used judiciously, or it starts to sound like a really cheap out-of-tune transistor radio.

I basically use mine to give my voice a third above the lead. The harmony voice is not as loud as my lead voice, and I usually only use it for part of a song, usually the chorus. One exception is when I do "Barbara Ann", but that's more of a novelty number where I'm showcasing the ability of the harmonizer to make one guy sound like a bunch of singers. Otherwise, it's used so sparingly that the audience doesn't even notice it's there. They just know that the vocal aspect of my show sounds really good.

I don't, as you can see, log in a lot, it's more of an age and memory thing, I tend to forget to do things these days, it's quite annoying. I did the video because I was always seeing famous people on the Sounding Board cover (A Martin Guitar mag) and not losers like myself, really it was just a parody type thing. The great thing about You Tube is no matter how good or bad a person performs (or video/sound quality) they can at least put stuff up for family, friends and anyone else. I used to play out until my health took a down turn and tried to get back into a few bands but I have a heap of bad discs in my back and need to sit often, the result, they all said it's not professional to sit when gigging so I do YT, it's all cool and I have fun so that's what counts. (I still miss gigging for a live crowd though.) I checked out your song link, some good stuff there and done a lot better then me. I am guessing they were done in a studio, that's another dream I have, to actually do songs in a real studio, but, some things just aren't ment to be....

Your right on the long decay, I overdid it on the reverb in some places.

It's just my basement studio....
