Sing from the 'mask'?

I was studying some teacher on the Internet and he was describing how a singer should sing from the 'mask', that is pretty much put the vibration and 'pressure' into your upper pallete and your nose.

I've always sang from my diaphram.

I tried singing from the mask and could reproduce what he was describing but absolutely hated the sound. It 'sounded' like I was singing through my nose.

I much prefer a strong 'hearty' voice. I sing from my diaphram.

It's not an either/or question. You use your diaphragm to control your breath support, and you use the 'mask' for placement and resonance.

"Placement" is where you articulate your vowel and consonant sounds. You make the tone with your vocal cords, but you manipulate it into words with your mouth and tongue. This is difficult to describe - it's much easier to demonstrate.

"Resonance" is part of your tone. You are already hearing the difference between the richer tone of good resonance and the pinched sound of shoving your tone up too far into your nose.

I would suggest that you find a good local voice coach who can spend an hour or so with you to clarify your approach, demonstrate these techniques, and maybe give you some exercises to do to capture the feeling of singing correctly in your mask and supporting it from your diaphragm.
