Members Superhelper
Hi, I am confused and scared, so I need some people to help me out. I'm 15 years old and I've been singing since I was elementary, but stopped singing when I got to the 7th grade because my voice started cracking. My voice has been cracking since ever since and I'm going to be in the 10th grade this fall. I'm daunted and very frustrated about singing now and I don't know if I damaged my vocal cords or if it's puberty. Like some days I can sing, then when I'm singing my voice goes out of pitch and it sort of cracks. I can't sustain notes and it sounds ugly. My voice is also getting low. I used to be able to sing very high and excellent, but not I'm scared that my voice is going away. My mom has scheduled my an appointment, but I'm scared. Can someone tell me what this may be. Is it puberty or could something be wrong. I've been drinking a liter----gallon of water since this summer, cause I'm scared that my voice is damaged. I've been in a house with a smoker, too, so I'm scared that I have noodules on my vocals cords. Please give me some details and what this could possibly be. Members grace_slick
Hiya I think it's most likely puberty. I'm not overly familiar with the happenings of pubescent boys, but it doesn't seem like it'd be actual damage to your voice. Being in a house with a smoker wouldn't cause what you're experiencing with your voice. And drinking lots of water wouldn't either. I also highly doubt you've got nodules, unless you've been straining and shouting with your voice for years, and I think you would've noticed yourself doing that... Good luck when you go to the doctor! I'm sure it'll all be fine.
Members Masklin
If you've done nothing that could damage your voice then yes it's puberty. Don't fret, it's just the way things go. If you're lucky you could sing along with Leonard Cohen, that would awesome, wouldn't it?
Moderators daddymack Posted July 29, 2010 Moderators Share Posted July 29, 2010 Eventually, your voice will reassert itself in a lower register. If you are fortunate, and can take the time, you can continue to work your voice now so that you might retain much of your upper register while the lower register settles in. Welcome to adulthood...it is not fun
