Members slodge
Just spent awhile singing into a microphone that had been used by a lot of smokers in the past and I feel like crap. I'm shocked a how bad it is - this microphone was used nightly in smokey bars in the mid nineties and then was in storage until about a year ago. Still toxic! Any tips for getting that residue off of a microphone?
Members Jersey Jack
Usually you can unscrew the grill and wash it. In Shure mics there is a piece of what feels like felt beneath the grill, and this too can be rinsed off--but be sure to let it thoroughly air-dry before putting it back on the mic. I don't smoke, but I always bring a thermos of Shiraz () to my gigs so the mic regularly starts to stink of stale wine ().
Members ido1957
If it's an SM58 you can pick up a shiny, new, clean one for about $75. Not worth fixing up a mic that old...
Members slodge
It's an Audio Technica ATW-T32 wireless. I have a couple of them from Karaoke systems that were used professionally during the 90's and I really like the way they sound. I've taken the whole system has out of retirement lately, for my kids' enterainment and neighborhood parties.
Members flemtone
wash, rinse, repeat. Not the electronics, though. If feasible, lay them in the sun for a while. Worst case, buy a windscreen.

Not worth fixing up a mic that old... lol.... man... ur the guy that throws the vintage mics away that I clean up and use in studios. I've found thousands of dollars worth of fantastic mics that people thought were garbage over the years.. and have paid very little out of my pocket for 'em. Seriously, I've seen people throwing out old EV's, Rode, Shure/Unidyne, Telefunken, RCA mics and even Neve preamps!! some were from yard sales or estate sales where the old lady didnt know what her "husband's junk" was, so the prices were cheap as hell... Members crowguitar
one little tidbit tho.I would keep that mic just for the fact that it's Frequency Range doesn't fall into the newly banned 700mhz category that the FCC puts into effect this summer. DO you know how many of my friends had to return or trade up their guitar & vocal wireless systems over the past few months? its ridiculous.
