Members P. Wallace
How did you find the instructor? Did you have other instructors before finding "the one?" How long did you study with an instructor? What would a typical lesson entail?

I experienced two years of HS Glee and Choir with a great instructor. I also took a seminar from Barantes, which was great.

Started with finding out where I was and what I was capable of. Then worked on the parts I was weak on. Once I got the info I needed, I stopped going. Members nflea7
1. Word of mouth, went around to the local colleges and talked to some of the music department staff, asked if they knew anyone. 2. Nope found the right one first go. Best in town. 3. 8 months total, 2-4x a month depending on how much extra cash I had that week. 4. Half hour lesson, started with basic breathing technique, proper use of breath. Then scales and excercises. Finding my top and bottom ranges and creating a plan I could take home with me. This is over the entire time. Each lesson is different as you progress
Members Jersey Jack
Unfortunately, you're probably not in a position to tell whether a teacher is the right one until you get further along. Unless there are truly spectacular errors--e.g., sing from your throat, not your diaphragm, keep going even if it hurts, etc.--you simply won't know at first. Such knowledge is almost always gained in hindsight. Nonetheless, almost any teacher can get you started with the basics.
