What's your speaking voice like?

I've just been reading about the Estill method of vocal teaching, and am noticing it's mentioning speaking voices as an area to be improved too, and that affects singing. This makes sense and yet I never really thought about it much.

What do you all speak like in terms of tone, smoothness or gravel-ness of speaking voice, volume, resonance (nasal speaking voice or a more projecting type of voice), and pitch of voice (really high or low)?

Does anyone here think how you speak is affecting your singing? Does anyone speak totally different from you sing? In terms of pitch level and volume or confidence, as such?

I myself...depending who I'm talking to, if it's to people I'm not confident with, I'll speak a bit softly and a little bit high. Not annoyingly so, but much higher than I do when I'm with familiar people. Then I'm much lower in pitch.

I have noticed that in terms of the projection and strength of how I speak, it's...still not really overly projecting, just like the issue I have when singing. It's not quiet or soft, and there's no breathiness at all, or raspiness or anything, but I just still feel like I'm talking in my throat, not OUT of my mouth.

Anyone else?

My speaking voice is lower than my singing voice by at least a 5th or so. I would guess that many American men do this, since a deep/resonant speaking voice is valued. I know that many of my friends are surprised by my singing voice since it's so different from my speaking voice.

I can't say if my speaking voice has any particular affect on my singing voice, though. Hopefully not since it's somewhat difficult to consciously speak differently.

If I'm not feeling particularly confident, it's rather high, weak and thin. If I'm "on" (either feeling awesome, or making my voice this way on purpose), then it becomes lower, stronger and more resonant.

Try speaking a little lower than you usually do (try a whole step down) - you might like the way it sounds.

mines about the average depth you would find in any guy, and smooth i think. ive noticed that when im around attractive women it lightens up a bit, raises in pitch just a tad bit, and is way softer and subtle. however when i have to a hardass in front of my friends i speak normally, in a deeper tone, that kinda pops out a little more.

i know my band mates were all very surprised when i started to sing our 1st cover song. i didnt sing for the 1st month of our practices because i wanted them to get their parts down so i could actually have something to sing to. my drummer insisted that i was too scared to, but when i did he said he was surprised at the sound i was producing. my guitarist came right out and said he had greatly underestimated me. they were also pretty surprised at my range, i have a pretty good falsetto on me and they were baffled at how high i could get.

but yea, i couldnt say my talking voice affects my singing. i think that most vocalists dont sing like they talk and vice versa. just youtube an interview with an artist's voice you know and are familiar with, and see how different their talking voice is from their singing voice

Mine is deep but without a lot of character and overtones. I'd love to improve it... Im not sure I could though.

Yes, there are lots of singers who sound completely different when there talking vs when there singing.

But I personally like singers who sound the same in both...because it has a very relaxing sound. I like Shade and Michael Buble and they speak nearly exactly how they sing. Its probably in the genes.... and probably doesnt take much effort.

But my favorite, are singers who sound the same in their chest voice, but still have the abillity to get high and powerful in the head. This is very rare. Elton John used to be able to do this.

This sounds awesome, I just wish I knew what you were talking about!

I'm not even sure how to categorise my voice, ha!
