Members azmyth
Ok, everyone's voice doesn't fit with every genre.. for example.. I'd make a terrible metal singer.I Have a very clean sounding voice (think all american rejects, or Incubus type sounds) How can you tell as a singer, where you belong as far as what kinds of music or genres your voice fits into. I've even done time in country, t40, and bluegrass bands. But a lot of singers do have more of a genre "comfort zone". I mean, can you imagine Nora Jones singing in a metal band? I can't. Is being limited to certain genres a deficiency? Not necessarily because then a singer can really focus on those specific styles until they "own" them. I guess it boils down to the fact that everyone is different, with different voices. Part of what makes the world a great place.

Members Williamz
Well I think once a singer gets the hang of their own voice they'll know how they want to sing and it usually fits into a certain genre. As Sevenstring pointed out I think your passion for certain kind of music will influence your voice a lot so that's the genre you often belong to. But it doesn't mean you can't get influenced by other genres, for example a pop kind of singer can take influences from rock or jazz or whatever music really. I don't think it's ever a good idea to try to somehow transform to be a totally different singer unless you feel it's really you. The worst thing I can think of is classical singers singing pop, often it's like they have studied pop singing and have all the pop singing tricks down to a tee, and thus it comes off as "studied" and unauthentic and clumsy. lolI know perfectly well what music I like the most and what kind of music I want to sing but as I like a lot of kind of music I take many influences from different genres, however I don't pretend to be metal singer ever because that would have awfully ridiculous results. lol

Members grace_slick
A) Your passion for certain types of music - I agree with this, but only to an extent. I love certain bands' and artists' sounds, and I want to sing these styles or genres of music, BUT... B) What you can do with your voice - this one gets in my way sometimes. I generally am ok in terms of the voice fitting in with what I love, but sometimes it doesn't work. I want to do more rockin' stuff like the heavier, Led Zepellin-type Heart songs and some Jefferson Airplane stuff, but my voice at this point in time doesn't want to. lol. Going back to A, I also agree with this as if you tend to love listening to certain genres or styles of music, you I think also tend to develop a certain type of leaning towards this...in your own mind and ears, you become used to it and nothing much else, so you forget how to sing other genres if you never or hardly listen to them. C) Your own ears - yes. You generally know what sounds discordant and wrong to yourself. D) Other people's ears - lol.
