Members Andrew JD
Hahahahhahaha! Great vid.... Depends on who ya ask, as far as the OP. Some would say some of the original growling came from guys like Ronnie James Dio back in the day, of course, as you climb the steps of heaviness, you'll find other say it was the dude from Venom and early black/Satanic/death metal.... If you ask me, it originated out of the whole early 80's metal scene, with all those guys trying to be one step heavier than the last guy... Members Consume
First, you'd have to define "growling". Growling/screaming like the 90' screaming guys? (Pantera, Coal Chamber, Korn, etc.) Or are you just talking rasphy voice, ie., Rod Stewart? Bon Scott was pretty raspy and high pitched and he definitely got a growling sound at times. Brian Johnson was the same. Biff Byford from Saxon (the band that Spinal Tap is actually based on according to Harry Shearer and Christopher Guest) had a decent rasp to his voice, and they first released their first LP around 78 or 79 I believe. Also, Paul Dianno from Maiden was DEFINITELY a Growler. Just listen to "Killers" and "Murders in the Rue Morgue" from Killers.

Members SevenString
King Diamond/Mercyful Fate Hmm... that might be a real contender. There were certainly "thrash" singers at the time, but I personally can't think of anyone before that who did true "growling" in metal. I can't find any clips, so anyone know if King Diamond was doing the growling thing on that first Mercyful Fate EP in '82?

Members bengerm77
I've heard that the first true cookie monster vocals came from the first napalm death record.

Members JonJon
The vocals on Borris the Spider may or may not be considered growling, but maybe some guy in an 80's metal band heard that and decided to try it. Who knows

Who knows Oh Yeah! Well if you play the Theme from Mr. Ed (A horse is a Horse of course, of course) backwards it says "I Sang This Song For Satan!" :poke:
