You play higher than the 1st chair or something? it means i play the part i wanted to play. 1st chair is for chumps with a complex. if i wanted first the part would have been mine. i just didn't want it. i pulled a screw you guys im playing 2nd chair. pending on the chart 2nd can be higher. i find 2nd to be the part i like usually. Members soundministries
2nd typically isn't higher, but does tend to get a lot more of the solos over 1st. Play well and enjoy. I have my auditions next week, though my bass bone chair is pretty secure in the top jazz. All I'm waiting on is to see if I'm playing bass bone or tube in the wind ensemble. Members MarkZ
In sections, jazz or orchestra, I maintain that 2nd chair can be the most challenging. The part is often the harmonic glue that holds the section together. You need "big ears" to listen well and support your principal/lead trumpet, adjust intonation, and provide balance. Very astute observation. Many times, second chair is playing the 3rds, 7ths, 13ths, and other color tones. Definitely need a good ear to keep that {censored} in tune. However, in the trumpet section, 4th or 5th is the most important part. How hard is it to play lead when there's not that octave support under you?
