The superbowl halftime show

I don't have a TV, and I was on call last night so I didn't check it out at a bar or anything. Right now watching Prince's show on YouTubez

Holy {censored}, even given my complete and utter hate of anything marching band-related, I'd have killed to be in the band that accompanied Prince

Also, was the entire stage getting soaked during his performance? What about his electronics and {censored}?

I'm no live sound expert, but I think wireless mics and guitar transmitter eliminate the risk of electrical shock in wet weather. Yes, no, maybe?

There is much debate on other forums that Prince's mic and guitar were live, the band and marching band were recorded. I can't imaging the marching band playing live. Clip mics on every instrument? Sync? Mixing? It's just not happening for a SB halftime show.

I was fortunate to see Prince @ Madison Square Garden on one of the "Musicology" dates. I bought a single ticket the day before, ended up sitting 10-12 rows from the stage. That was one major league ass pummeling 2.5 hours o' funk. Midway through the show, the band leaves the stage and Prince belts out a half dozen hits with an acoustic guitar. "Little Red Corvette" unplugged? Totally works. Too bad I wasn't there the following night when Morris Day and the Time showed up @ MSG to open for Prince.

Ah, yes, wireless - that makes sense...

That's great you got to see Prince live!

A good song can stand up to many different treatments. I enjoy hearing (good) songs in different contexts.

For example, I've been hearing an India Arie version of Don Henley's "Heart of the Matter" lately. Very different from his version, and very nice.

You're totally ruining my little fantasy here  raining on my superbowl, as it were ...

{censored}. i'm sorry about that one :(

Which MSG show did you see? Years ago after he played MSG (for which I was not present), he was doing an after show at the now-defunkt Brownie's. A friend of mine and I went to see him there (at 1am), but the line was wrapped around the block. So we went to the pool hall across the street and shot a few games. At about 4am, we noticed there was no line, so we went, the doorman just let us in (ah, the days in NYC when doormen wouldn't give you the third degree just to get into a club!), and there was hardly anyone in the club! Like 20 people  I stood literally right against the stage within arm's length of Prince. If you remember Brownie's, they had like a 3-foot stage, and I was still taller than Prince :D :D :D

I only saw like 2 tunes and he finally called it a night :( But Chaka Khan did a duo with him :)

Which MSG show did you see?

IIRC, it was the Tuesday night show at the Garden, July 2005 (can't remember the date...7/19 maybe). I think he played Mon-Wed. or Mon-Thurs. that week.

I've never been to Brownie's. My NYC club experience has been limited to the "tourist jazz clubs": Blue Note, Iridium, Jazz Standard, Vanguard, etc. In fact, I'll probably be at the Blue Note next week to see Kurt Elling and definitely be there at the end of the month to see Ivan Lins. I hate paying the cover but they get all the A-list artists.

Ok. The Prince show I went to was years before that ... NPG era. 90's.

The only big-name "jazz club" I'd go to without getting in for free is the Iridium to see Les Paul. But I already did that once, so I'm not gonna do it again

I've wanted to see Les Paul. Sad to say, but he's not going to live forever.

I haven't been to Iridium in a while. 2 years ago, I saw the "Jaco Big Band" w/Jimmy Haslip. When the club was near Lincoln Center, I saw McCoy Tyner w/ Michael Brecker there. The old location was much better than the one on Broadway.
