haha, do you have the original of this? I have a Quicktime video of it, downloaded from YouTube.

When I first started playing I used compression a lot, but I had a real heavy picking hand at that time. And could be fairly sloppy with the other.Now in the last few years compression has seemed to get in the way of my playing.Is this just me or do others feel that compression really isn't necessarry. I think it's a crutch. I just rely on the natural compression from the amp. It's enough for me. I might use compression in the future, but only for deliberately excessively compressed guitar effects, that "squeezed" effect etc.

For what it's worth, I remember them playing on SNL with a Marshall combo. You could probably youtube that video and see how it sounds live. I want to say it might have been one of the purple tolex anniversary amps with the million knobs and channels, but my memory could be off. Those things could get pretty saturated on some of the heavier modes, it would make sense to me if that's what they used in the studio. Thanks for that info!

What happened to nerine anyway? Has his bogner melted his skull or something*? I heard they could do that on the internet. Maybe the haunting mids overcome him?

Now I reckon it's just a cranked distortion pedal straight into their Vox AC30, which they also use for that sweet chorused clean tone. The distortion tone just doesn't seem very full, you know?
