  5. Musikmesse, Frankfurt, Germany, April 10th, 2013 - Korg USA has announced the Volca series of portable, true-analog synthesizers. Following in the footsteps of the Korg Monotron, Monotribe, and the MS-20 Mini synth, these next-generation true-analog instruments offer on-the-go sounds and grooves along with MIDI functionality. The series is comprised of three models: the Volca Keys lead synthesizer; the Volca Bass synthesizer; and the Volca Beats rhythm machine. All models provide carefully selected parameters that allow users to create the distinctive, massive sounds that can only come from a true analog synthesizer. Each instrument features a loop sequencer for intuitively generating and recalling phrase-based performances. Multiple Volcas can be used in tandem thanks to vintage-style sync in/out, or with the user's DAW software via MIDI In. Convenient, optional battery operation and built-in speakers provide the ability to play anywhere at any time. The Volca Keys represents a new chapter in Korg's long history of analog synthesizers. This 27-key analog lead synth generates sound that's more powerful than its compact, low-profile body would suggest. Its three oscillators can be tuned against each other in a variety of ways-from one part unison to three-part chords-to provide the versatility needed to create a diversity of sounds. With a filter section that utilizes the circuitry of the classic miniKORG700S (1974) plus an easy-to-use interface that includes delay effects and a 16-step sequencer, Volca Keys offers the richly expressive sounds that are distinctive of an analog synth, and combines the enjoyment of basic sound creation with deep functionality. The Volca Bass is an analog bass line groove box that's capable of generating a wide range of bass lines. Though basic in structure, the analog sound engine has an unmistakable presence with subtle nuances that cannot be reproduced by a digital simulation, making it ideally-suited for acid house and many other styles of electronic music. Its step sequencer-distilled from Korg's Electribe series-offers a convenient, visually intuitive way to generate "free form" bass loops to stimulate inspiration. The three oscillators can be combined in several ways via a voicing function, to generate a variety of thick and modulated bass sounds. The Volca Beats offers six fat analog drum sounds: Kick, Snare, Hi Tom, Lo Tom, Closed Hi Hat, and Open Hi Hat. It contains a wide array of sound variations that could not be produced by any means other than analog, with special emphasis on the sounds that are considered indispensable for dance music. A PCM sound engine is also included for generating clap, crash and others sounds that are better suited for PCM. Simple knob-based parameters can be used to quickly create a variety of drum sounds. For example, simply by using the three knobs (Click, Pitch, and Decay), a variety of kick sounds can be crafted, ranging from rough sounds that dominate the low range to tight sounds that keep a precise beat. In addition, a 16-part sequencer is included to easily add or remove parts. The Volca series will be available in July 2013 for a U.S. street price of $149.99 each. Additional product information is available at Korg.com

  12. HAMBURG, GERMANY—Yamaha introduces the second-generation HS Series studio monitor and subwoofer series at Musikmesse 2013. The extended, revamped lineup features a new 6.5” monitor and reaffirms the philosophy of delivering sonic purity without any coloring or alteration of the original sound. This approach ensures that music production professionals and home studio aficionados arrive at the most faithful mix. “Yamaha studio monitors are designed to help music producers achieve the most accurate mix by ensuring that the sound coming from your speakers is true to the original,” said Athan Billias, Director of Marketing, Pro Audio and Combo Division, Yamaha Corporation of America. “While many manufacturers enhance their monitors to make them sound impressive, HS Series near-field reference monitors deliver a concise sound image, high resolution and flat response, providing an ideal sonic platform to build on throughout the mixing process.” Improving on the success of the original HS line launched in 2006, the completely redesigned HS series feature new transducers that achieve smooth response over a wide bandwidth and ensure the accuracy of signal reproduction throughout the audio spectrum. By upgrading to a 1” tweeter (from the previous ¾” models) the new monitor series provides an extended frequency range and deliver superb high-resolution sound. Yamaha engineers have optimized the HS powered monitor and subwoofer monitor system for a variety of music production environments. The HS5 (5” cone and 1” dome tweeter), HS7 (6.5” cone and 1” dome tweeter) and HS8 (8” cone and 1” dome tweeter) are housed in bass reflex-type cabinets and reproduce tight low-end and smooth, high frequency response. Two inputs, a balanced XLR and a ¼” phone jack, can accommodate a wide range of balanced and unbalanced sources, including mixers, keyboards and audio interfaces. The ultra-responsive HS8S (8” cone) powered subwoofer employs large, carefully selected magnets to produce low distortion sound with a well-defined bottom end at all output levels. Two balanced XLR and two balanced ¼” phone jacks are provided for advanced connectivity and customization. All of the woofer’s components, including the woofer ring and basket, further contribute to the stunning bass and clear, accurate mids. Additionally, the new HS Series cabinets offer low resonance enclosure designs constructed from a dense, resilient MDF for a damped acoustic response that is perfectly suited for reference monitors. Each monitor and subwoofer is also equipped with a unique high performance amp unit, perfectly paired with each transducer. The coupled amp unit ensures that each HS Series speaker delivers high-resolution sound with exceptionally flat response across the spectrum. Each monitor speaker employs leading edge noise reduction technology, controlling and reducing the vortex at either end of the speaker port that can generate air vibrations inside and cause unwanted noise in many studio monitors. To combat this, Yamaha adopted advanced noise reduction technology when designing the ports. The HS5 (MSRP: $250), the HS7 (MSRP: $399), the HS8 (MSRP: $499) and the HS8S (MSRP: $599) subwoofer are currently available. 13. HAMBURG, GERMANY—Yamaha premieres its completely revamped DTX-502 electronic drums at Musikmesse 2013. Based on the award-winning DTX-PAD, the new kits boast numerous innovations, including newly designed tom pads, a lighter-weight steel rack and a brand new drum trigger module that is more powerful than anything else in its class. With almost twice the wave ROM and more than 250 additional sounds than the previous model, the new DTX502 drum trigger module is the first to incorporate drum and cymbal samples from top VST developers that have been optimized for DTX by Yamaha’s sound engineers. For truly customized sounds and songs, the system lets users import audio samples and MIDI files for further expandability. During the development phase, Yamaha created proprietary laser technology to analyze drum strokes and precisely tune the trigger settings, so that the playing experience on each of these sets provides a more natural feel. It also includes advanced features from the higher-end DTX models such as cymbal muting, natural swells and smoother snare drum rolls. “Most of the changes to the new DTX502 series can’t be seen but they can be heard and felt,” said Athan Billias, Director of Marketing, Yamaha Corporation of America, Pro Audio & Combo Division. “There’s a lot more than meets to eye involved with this upgrade and drummers will be impressed when they get behind these new kits.” The new DTX502 module has a streamlined front panel layout that puts the most-used features at your fingertips, and features plug and play USB connectivity for easy interfacing with a computer. The new design allows the DTX502 to be easily mounted to acoustic drum hardware using a standard multi-clamp (such as the Yamaha CSAT924A) for use in a hybrid acoustic-electronic drum set. The DTX502 series includes new training and educational functions for drummers to improve their playing, no matter one’s current skill level. With eight practice routines that help develop rhythmic timing, pad accuracy and drumming endurance, the system calculates a score after each session so that drummers can track their progress. The DTX522K, the most affordable model in the series, includes the three-zone XP80 8” DTX-PAD snare and three newly designed TP70 7.5” tom pads. The new TP70 pad is softer and quieter, yet more expressive than the previous model. This kit, which comes with three-zone, choke-able ride and crash cymbals, showcases another technological advancement in electronic drumming – the Yamaha DTX522K is the first electronic drum kit ever to feature a three-zone hi-hat pad. The new RS502 rack system uses steel pipes to offer solid performance and flexible setup options in a lightweight package. The next kit in the lineup, the DTX532K, uses the same drum pads and rack system as the DTX522K but features an upgraded hi-hat and two large PCY135 13” three-zone choke-able cymbal pads. The RHH135 vertical motion hi-hat pad, which mounts to the included Yamaha HS650A hi-hat stand, provides a setup that more closely matches an acoustic kit. The top model in this series is the new DTX562K, which includes the large cymbals and real hi-hat pad, upgrades the toms to an all-DTX-PAD configuration with three XP70 7” pads so that playing the kit feels comfortable for even the most demanding acoustic drummer. 14. FRANKFURT - April 10, 2013 - The Taylor Grand Orchestra, the newest body shape in the company's guitar line, debuted earlier this year at the Winter NAMM Show to rave reviews from dealers and players. As part of a year-long rollout, Taylor is pleased to introduce the latest Grand Orchestra model, the all-koa K28e, at the Musikmesse trade show in Frankfurt, Germany. The K28e boasts the bold yet balanced voice of its Grand Orchestra body shape, while koa's appealing tonal flavors blend the midrange of mahogany with a splash of high-end sparkle. The koa top tends to impart a more controlled attack to the guitar's sound compared to spruce, explains Taylor master builder Andy Powers, who designed the guitar. "The koa top makes a more subtle entrance," he says. "The notes have a graceful, 'fashionably late' quality, giving the player a smooth and sweet-sounding sustain." The Grand Orchestra's proprietary bracing is a hybrid parabolic and scalloped design that produces unprecedented balance and responsiveness for a big-bodied guitar. Like other Grand Orchestra models that have been introduced this year (the 518e, 618e and 918e), the K28e makes its debut with a special release of 100 First Edition models. In addition to the beautiful wood-rich appointments that characterize other Koa Series models - Indian rosewood binding, a rosewood and maple rosette, and Island Vine inlay - premium touches include AA-grade koa and tone-enhancing Adirondack spruce bracing. Each First Edition model K28e comes with a custom label and ships in a Deluxe "First Edition" hardshell case. Once the guitar is registered, the owner will receive a custom GO First Edition guitar strap, a numbered certificate of authenticity, and a special commemorativebooklet. All models are equipped with Taylor's proprietary Expression System® acoustic electronics. The K28e will eventually become a standard model with the Koa Series. The Grand Orchestra was born from Taylor's passion for innovation and desire to revoice the Taylor Jumbo. Rethinking what a modern big-bodied guitar could be, Taylor's team of luthiers experimented with new body dimensions. One of the goals was to capture some of a Dreadnought's robust tonal personality to produce big, round, richly solid notes. The resulting Grand Orchestra shape is slightly longer than a traditional Dreadnought, features a tighter waist and a wider bottom bout to heighten the tonal properties, and a deeper body depth to increase volume output. Its voice is strong and complex, with the kind of tonal balance that fits perfectly into Taylor's family of shapes and sounds. The Grand Orchestra is the fifth body shape in Taylor's acoustic guitar line, joining other proprietary Taylor shapes including the Grand Concert, Grand Auditorium and Grand Symphony, along with the Dreadnought. Grand Orchestra models are designated within each Taylor series by ending with the numeral "8" (e.g., 618e). GO models will be available at Authorized Taylor Dealers around the world. To experience the new Grand Orchestra models while at Musikmesse, please visit the Taylor Guitars stand in Hall 3.1 E80 & E83. 16. FRANKFURT - April 10, 2013 -Spring abounds with exotic tonewoods and fresh inspiration in Taylor's line of Spring Limited Edition guitars. Celebrating the heritage of the 600 and 400 Series, Taylor is offering fresh voicing with the inclusion of two exotic tonewoods to the mix: African ebony and granadillo. Beautiful sapwood-infused ebony makes a striking impression with two models, the 614ce-LTD and 616ce-LTD. The ebony was sourced from a sustainably managed forest in Congo, and each set is visually unique, as swaths of light-colored sapwood and dark heartwood play off each other with stunning effects. Compared to Macassar ebony, the African species has a slightly higher density, which yields a ringing, overtone-rich character with a linear quality across the tonal spectrum. European spruce was chosen for the top because of the way it matches ebony's sonic personality. "It has a strong attack with a lot of headroom, making for rich, saturated notes," says Taylor master builder Andy Powers, who designed the guitar. The effect is intensified with Adirondack spruce bracing. Because of the rich overtones, this wood pairing is likely to appeal to fingerstylists and other players who favor a complex acoustic voice. Unique aesthetic touches include an ivoroid/koa "Spiked Ovals" fretboard inlay, ivoroid binding, curly koa top edge trim, an ivoroid/ koa rosette, and gold Gotoh 510 tuners. In the 400 Series Limiteds, players are treated to granadillo, a native wood to Central America. Granadillo is often compared to rosewood, but with a sonic crispness that resonates well with players of all styles. Paired with a Sitka spruce top, these guitars boast an impressive sustain and are available in four different body styles: Dreadnought, Grand Concert, Grand Auditorium and Grand Symphony, all with a cutaway. Granadillo was also used for the bridge and headstock overlay, and complementary appointments include rock maple binding, rosette and Progressive Dot fretboardinlays. The 600 and 400 Series Spring Limiteds both ship with a deluxe hardshell case and come equipped with Taylor Expression System® acoustic electronics. The models are currently available in the United States at Authorized Taylor Dealers. To experience the new Spring Limiteds while at Musikmesse, please visit the Taylor Guitars stand in Hall 3.1 E80 & E83 For additional news from Taylor Guitars, please visit: www.taylorguitars.com/news www.twitter.com/TaylorGuitars
