Thanks a bunch for the replies everyone. And I'm glad you guys actually understood my question, 'cause I posted it in the synth forum and basically was told that "MIDI is not an actual sound," which I already knew (I guess I phrased my question poorly, but at least you guys know exactly what I meant). Very informative stuff, I actually had no idea that different MIDI controllers would color your sound in a different way. I'll definitely try some of these things, including the book mentioned. Another question I had was, is there a certain limit that no sound should ever exceed in a mix? I think I read that on tweakheadz before. Thanks again!

Well I'm still trying to grasp this EQ thing, but to no avail. I understand there's something close to a standard method of EQing for things like guitar, bass, vocals, and drums, but what if you have a ton of different layered MIDI tracks where you're not exactly certain what "space" they belong in? (especially really processed and ambient sounds) Say I have two guitars and a mandolin all at once. One guitar has some arpeggiated chords and the other is playing lead, and the mandolin is in there too. So how exactly does one know what to do with each of these instruments as far as panning and EQ and all that? Have I mentioned that I don't really understand EQ at all? Thanks for any help in advance and I apologize for the newb questions, but we've all been here, right?
