    I played one of these 20 years ago - still have it somewhere. From what I remember it requires a footswitch or all the channels are on. I ended talking to some folks who had worked on the design (as I could not find a footswitch anywhere) and got to the clean channel by connecting two of the ports with a paper clip. A whole lot less muddy after that.
