Ascending, melodic major would be the same as regular Major/Ionian - Harmonic Major is just Harmonic Minor with a raised 3rd, and Melodic Minor with a raised 3rd is just Major. But Melodic Minor is not the same going up and down, so Melodic Major could indeed be distinguished from regular Major. Melodic Minor descending is the same as natural minor, so Melodic Major descending could consist of Mixolydian b6 (same as natural minor with a raised 3rd).
