  1. Yamaha today announced that the second-generation HS Series studio monitor and subwoofer series is now shipping. The extended, revamped lineup features a new 6.5” monitor and reaffirms the philosophy of delivering sonic purity without any coloring or alteration of the original sound. This approach ensures that music production professionals and home studio aficionados arrive at the most faithful mix. The HS Series monitors will be on display at Summer NAMM 2013. “Yamaha studio monitors are designed to help music producers achieve the most accurate mix by ensuring that the sound coming from your speakers is true to the original,” said Athan Billias, Director of Marketing, Pro Audio and Combo Division, Yamaha Corporation of America. “While many manufacturers enhance their monitors to make them sound impressive, HS Series near-field reference monitors deliver a concise sound image, high resolution and flat response, providing an ideal sonic platform to build on throughout the mixing process.” Improving on the success of the original HS line launched in 2006, the completely redesigned HS series feature new transducers that achieve smooth response over a wide bandwidth and ensure the accuracy of signal reproduction throughout the audio spectrum. By upgrading to a 1” tweeter (from the previous ¾” models) the new monitor series provides an extended frequency range and deliver superb high-resolution sound. Yamaha engineers have optimized the HS powered monitor and subwoofer monitor system for a variety of music production environments. The HS5 (5” cone and 1” dome tweeter), HS7 (6.5” cone and 1” dome tweeter) and HS8 (8” cone and 1” dome tweeter) are housed in bass reflex-type cabinets and reproduce tight low-end and smooth, high frequency response. Two inputs, a balanced XLR and a ¼” phone jack, can accommodate a wide range of balanced and unbalanced sources, including mixers, keyboards and audio interfaces. The ultra-responsive HS8S (8” cone) powered subwoofer employs large, carefully selected magnets to produce low distortion sound with a well-defined bottom end at all output levels. Two balanced XLR and two balanced ¼” phone jacks are provided for advanced connectivity and customization. All of the woofer’s components, including the woofer ring and basket, further contribute to the stunning bass and clear, accurate mids. Additionally, the new HS Series cabinets offer low resonance enclosure designs constructed from a dense, resilient MDF for a damped acoustic response that is perfectly suited for reference monitors. Each monitor and subwoofer is also equipped with a unique high performance amp unit, perfectly paired with each transducer. The coupled amp unit ensures that each HS Series speaker delivers high-resolution sound with exceptionally flat response across the spectrum. Each monitor speaker employs leading edge noise reduction technology, controlling and reducing the vortex at either end of the speaker port that can generate air vibrations inside and cause unwanted noise in many studio monitors. To combat this, Yamaha adopted advanced noise reduction technology when designing the ports. Pricing and availability: The HS5 (MSRP: $250), the HS7 (MSRP: $399), the HS8 (MSRP: $499) and the HS8S (MSRP: $599) subwoofer are now shipping.
  2. Yamaha today announced that the new HPH-MT220 and HPH-MT120 studio-series headphones, ideal for modern recording, are now shipping and will be on display at Summer NAMM 2013. As an ideal tool for demanding monitoring environments, marked by revolutionary changes including greater-than-CD resolution, noise-free recording and all-digital processing, the new headphones feature advanced technology to deliver clear, accurate sound. The MT220 and MT120 deliver high-resolution sound reproduction with maximum clarity over the full frequency range due to the use of copper-clad aluminum wire voice coils. Yamaha has paid careful attention to other details when designing these elegant, but functional headphones. The shape is large enough to completely cover the ears, yet they provide a comfortable fit for extended sessions and the three-dimensional arms pivot, allowing users to adjust the slope of the cups. “Monitoring headphones have to fit well for long-term use and must be able to reproduce today’s digital recordings with complete faithfulness,” said Athan Billias, Director of Marketing, Yamaha Pro Audio & Combo Division. “These new models are the perfect complement to any studio set up.” The MT220 features an aluminum hairline finish, which gives the surface a luxurious texture and are also constructed of ergonomic memory foam ear cushions with an ultra-soft covering. Outer earpad coverings are made of synthetic protein leatherette, which features skin-like smoothness, and provides proper fit and insulation for top-quality sound insulation. Pricing and availability: The HPH-MT220 (MSRP: $399) and HPH-MT120 (MSRP: $299) are now shipping.
  3. Yamaha today announced that the new POCKETRAK PR7, an easy-to-use, ultra-portable linear recorder that captures effortless high-quality recordings whenever and wherever needed, is now shipping. Equipped with newly developed XY stereo microphones, the PR7 captures high-resolution stereo recordings, achieving consistent quality and natural sound regardless of the surrounding environment. 4. Yamaha today premiered its revamped DTX502 electronic drums at Summer NAMM 2013. Based on the award-winning DTX-PAD, the new kits feature numerous innovations, including redesigned tom pads, a lighter-weight steel rack and a brand new drum trigger module that is more powerful than anything else in its class. With almost twice the wave ROM and more than 250 additional sounds than the previous model, the new DTX502 drum trigger module is the first to incorporate drum and cymbal samples from top VST developers that have been optimized for DTX by Yamaha’s sound engineers. For truly customized sounds and songs, the system lets users import audio samples and MIDI files for further expandability. During the development phase, Yamaha created proprietary laser technology to analyze drum strokes and precisely tune the trigger settings, so that the playing experience on each of these sets provides a more natural feel. The new series also includes advanced features from the higher-end DTX models, such as cymbal muting, natural swells and smoother snare drum rolls. “Most of the changes to the new DTX502 series need to heard and felt to be fully appreciated,” said Athan Billias, Director of Marketing, Yamaha Corporation of America, Pro Audio & Combo Division. “There’s a lot more than meets the eye involved with this upgrade, and drummers will be impressed when they get behind these new kits.” The new DTX502 module has a streamlined front panel layout and features plug and play USB connectivity to a computer. The new design allows the DTX502 to be easily mounted to acoustic drum hardware using a standard multi-clamp (such as the Yamaha CSAT924A) for use in a hybrid acoustic-electronic drum set. The DTX502 series includes new training and educational functions for drummers to improve their playing, at any skill level. With eight practice routines that help develop rhythmic timing, pad accuracy and drumming endurance, the system calculates a score after each session so that drummers can track their progress. The DTX522K, the most affordable model in the series, includes the three-zone XP80 8” DTX-PAD snare and three newly designed TP70 7.5” tom pads. The new TP70 pad is softer and quieter, yet more expressive than the previous model. This kit, which comes with three-zone, choke-able ride and crash cymbals, showcases another technological first in electronic drumming – a three-zone hi-hat pad. The kit’s new RS502 rack system uses steel pipes to offer solid performance and flexible setup options in a lightweight package. The next kit in the lineup, the DTX532K, uses the same drum pads and rack system as the DTX522K but features an upgraded hi-hat and two large PCY135 13” three-zone choke-able cymbal pads. The RHH135 vertical motion hi-hat pad, which mounts to the included Yamaha HS650A hi-hat stand, provides a setup that more closely matches an acoustic kit. The top model in this series is the new DTX562K, which includes the 13” cymbals and real hi-hat pad, upgrades the toms to an all-DTX-PAD configuration with three XP70 7” pads so that playing the kit feels comfortable for even the most demanding acoustic drummer. Pricing and availability: The DTX562K (MSRP: $2,637), DTX532K (MSRP: $1,732) and DTX522K (MSRP: $1,507) are now shipping.

Extra-large, front-facing speakers provide a full and rich room-filling presence. “The DGX-650 is an ensemble digital piano that is ready to be enjoyed by a wide range of aspiring pianists, from those looking to learn and grow their musical abilities to those who may want the experience of playing with a band,” said Dane Madsen, Yamaha Digital Piano Marketing Manager. “Players of all abilities will appreciate the comprehensive learning features, great sound and connectivity that make it possible to easily share performances with friends and relatives.” The DGX-650’s XG song file compatibility and optional “You Are the Artist” series songbooks allow players to learn and play along with recordings of their favorite songs made popular by artists like Taylor Swift, Coldplay, Adele, Johnny Cash and more. With this special collection of piano songbooks and play-along recordings, piano music can be experienced in several ways. The piano part of a song can be played on the DGX-650’s keyboard while XG song files play all of the backing band parts. Songs can be slowed down to allow players to practice at a comfortable tempo before speeding up when they’re ready. Players can even practice one hand while the DGX-650 plays the other. “You Are the Artist” series songbooks and XG song files can be purchased at yamahamusicsoft.com/xg or any authorized Hal Leonard music retailer. Sharing music is now easier than ever with new USB audio recording capabilities. CD-quality audio recordings of performances can be loaded onto computer and emailed to a friend, posted as a video on YouTube or simply transferred to an iPod. The DGX-650 has many key features that intuitively assist beginners and novices in expressing themselves musically. Smart Chord mode enables major and minor chords to be played with just one key and is suitable for a variety of genres. For example, when playing a jazz song, players can automatically create complex 7th and 9th chords. When playing pop music, simpler three-note chords can be created. With Smart Chord, these instant four and five-note harmonies are now possible with a single finger. A stereo 3.5mm AUX line input enables external audio devices to take advantage of the DGX-650 speaker system and offers another way aspiring artists can play along with their favorite songs stored on iPods, CD players or computers. The DGX-650 delivers full 128-note polyphony, twice as much as the previous DGX-640 model, as well as more Voices (543) and Styles (195). The new Style Recommender feature makes it easy to find a style of music based on playing keystrokes in any given rhythm. Based on what is played, a list of Styles that are similar to that rhythm, such as “bossa nova” or “rock ballad,” are provided in the display for quick audition and selection. The new speaker/headphone control gives performers a choice when connecting to external amplification. For example, if a PA is connected to the headphone jack, the player can choose to leave the built-in speakers powered for use as a local audio monitor. 15. DIYers everywhere, now it’s easier than ever to add true bypass switching to your effect pedals! Monomonster’s new Relay Bypass Module (RBM) is a small printed circuit board that can be retrofitted into guitar effects with no true bypass switching to get rid of the tone sucking once and for all. The RBM can also be incorporated into new designs to offer an elegant switching system that is superior to the common stomp switch based solutions. A clever microcontroller governed circuitry on-board prevents pops resulting from DC offset on the effect output during switch-over and carful PCB design minimizes coupling from the relay to your circuit so your switching will be quick and silent! monomonster.wordpress.com
  16. After some intense voting via Facebook over the past few weeks, the Empress Effects faithful have dubbed Empress' newest creation Nebulus. This pedal brings guitarists high quality chorus, flanger and vibrato effects in a compact 4.5 by 3.5 inch pedal. To increase the tone range even further 3 variations on each effect are available for a total of 9 tweak-able modes. All this flexibility is easy to access via a preset system capable of storing up to 8 different presets. The chorus mode offers a lush and warm sounding chorus, a fluid and dreamy multi-chorus, and a unique tremolo'ed chorus. The flanger setting has a classic tape flange, a 70's negative feedback flanger, and the elusive thru-zero flange. Lastly, but certainly not least, are the vibrato sub-modes which include a standard vibrato, a classic vibe sound, and a rotating speaker effect. Each mode includes a special switch which allows the guitarist to really tweak settings that are crucial and it also offers some bonus features like the ability to add compression to vibrato mode, for example. For further fine tuning, a tone switch is available offering warm, clean, and bright voicings to the effect. This true bypass pedal offers the uncompromising sound quality that guitarists have learned to expect from Empress pedals in a very small package. With chorus, flanger and vibrato all only one touch away, this pedal is an incredible value. This weekend, at the Summer NAMM show in Nashville, Canada's Empress Effects will be unveiling their first offering into the high-gain pedal market. The aptly named Heavy offers up 2 channel of high-gain distortion: heavy and heavier. In keeping with Empress' design philosophy, this pedal is packed full of controls and features. The innovative weight knob adds a new level of control, allowing the user to adjust the character of the low end. This, combined with 3 bands of EQ, makes the Heavy a very powerful tool for tailoring your sound.Another feature sure to be attracting attention is the selection of gates available on each channel. The natural setting allows the full range of styles to shine through, allowing notes to sustain without cutting out and keeping attack transients sounding natural. The Aggressive setting is great for tight punchy playing and fast starts and stops. Even with the gates off, this pedal is exceptionally quiet. You'll find a huge range of killer high-gain tones in the Heavy. From crisp, mid-driven 80's metal, to scooped, modern down-tuned brutality, this little box of sonic mayhem does it all. The two independent channels can be voiced similarly so that one channel can be used as a solo boost, or they can be voiced entirely differently by using the mid range control in conjunction with the 3 position mid frequency select switch.
  17. Throughout each day at Summer NAMM (held between July 11 and 13 at the new Music City Center), there will be scheduled contests between contestants pitting their human dexterity in tuning a standard guitar against Gibson’s Min-ETune™ technology, which tunes the strings to standard or alternate tunings electronically. Gibson will give a guitar to anyone who can “beat the robot,” but even if no one beats the Min-ETune, anyone who tries will be entered in a drawing to win a premium Gibson guitar with Min-ETune, as well as receive a set of Gibson strings. Can you beat the robot? Stop by booth #1526 to find out, as well as to experience the latest exciting products from Gibson Brands. About Min-ETune Gibson’s Min-ETune is a novel, compact “robot tuning” system that lets guitarists spend more time playing and less time tuning. The battery-powered Min-ETune (80 to 100 tunings per charge) mounts unobtrusively on the back of a guitar’s headstock, and is invisible from the front. Simply choose from 12 popular tunings or six user-programmable custom tunings, push a button, and strum—within seconds, the guitar is tuned. Min-ETune-equipped guitars can also be tuned manually. Ambient noise levels don’t matter, because Min-ETune senses string tension. Min-ETune is currently available for eleven Les Paul and SG-style guitars, from Traditional to Future Tribute models. For more information on Min-ETune in eight languages, please visit http://www2.gibson.com/Products/min-etune.aspx.
  18. Guitars are like cars: they need regular care to keep them operating at their peak performance. Because Gibson wants to help all guitar players get the most enjoyment out of their instruments, expert luthiers and guitar techs will be presenting short, highly informative workshops on setup, maintenance, and other guitar-related tips during Summer NAMM (held between July 11 and 13 at Nashville’s new Music City Center). 19. Since its introduction, the TightRock has been very popular, but as usual Amptweaker received many requests for a variation.....the new FatRock is the culmination of discussions on online forums, from players who wanted a warmer version that worked better with brighter guitars and amps. All features are identical to the TightRock, but the tone has been tweaked to extend the low range of the Tight and Tone controls, add a fixed Fat boost at the frontend for a slightly less aggressive attack, knocking the edge down, and boosting the lowend in the output EQ. The SideTrak™ effects loop is a popular Amptweaker exclusive feature. This extra effects loop turns OFF when the pedal is ON and can be used to add a compressor, chorus or chain of effects that only works when you play clean, or to switch to another distortion pedal to use for the rhythm or lead sound...all without having to hit more than one pedal....it’s like having a built-in A/B box. Standard effects loop with Pre/Post switch is also included on the back, as well as the LED illumination of controls, Battery On/Off switch, and magnetic battery access door. Since introducing the popular TightMetal™ distortion pedal in 2011, Amptweaker™ has received many requests for a two button version. Unlike most distortion pedals with boost, the TightMetal Pro includes 2 Boost knobs, one before and one after the distortion.....so it’s easy to boost the gain AND volume, for the perfect solo tone. There’s also a Midboost button that works with the output Boost knob, to help solos cut through the mix. We also polled many customers who didn’t like the TightMetal, to find out what tone changes could be offered to reign in those other metal tones. The result is the Smooth Edge switch which cuts the high end sizzle for a warmer edge, and 2 Fat switches allow either the normal or Boosted tones to have a thicker attack with a bit more compression. The added three band EQ allows for much tonal variation, with its Thrash button for more traditional deeper scooped mids. Our standard noise gate from the original TightMetal is also included, with the hard stopping Chomp setting to help keep the rhythm as tight as possible.....especially when doing very quick riffs with a lot of palm-muted stops. Internal adjustments allow for tweaking the gate. Amptweaker pedals are known for effects loops, and this one has 3: a universal loop, another active with the boost, and our popular SideTrak loop which activates when the pedal is OFF, to automatically shut off clean effects. Standard Amptweaker features: LED illumination of controls, 14 gauge steel housing and true bypass switching.

Picking up where UA's legacy Pultec emulations left off, the new Pultec collection revisits two must-have Pultec EQs — the EQP-1A and MEQ-5 — and adds the HLF-3C filter. Lauded as the most popular outboard studio equalizers ever made, these classic Pultec EQs can be heard on countless hit recordings from the past five decades. The EQP-1A Program EQ is famous for bringing out individual frequency ranges without significantly altering neighboring frequencies, remaining smooth and musical even with extreme levels of boost. With the companion MEQ-5 Mid-Range Equalizer, producers can skillfully tweak the mid-range thanks to its abundance of band overlap and unique filter interactions. Finally, the HLF-3C adds 12 dB per octave low and high cut filters, providing broad, retro-flavored tone sculpting. The new Pultec Passive EQ Collection models the complex transformer and tube amplifier nonlinearities of these must-have tools, in addition to their unique filter interactions. The result is a dead-on emulation of the Pultec's signature air, silkiness, and warmth. Available for purchase via UA's Online Store, the new Pultec Passive EQ Plug-In Collection is selling for $299US, or for $149US for current owners of the legacy Pultec Pro EQ plug-in. 22. There’s no shortage of powered PA speakers, but the P-Series from Cerwin-Vega! has made DJs, solo acts, ensembles, bands, presenters, and others take notice of the extreme levels of power, bass, and clarity that the P-Series offers. DJs have particularly demanding requirements, because the sound has to be loud, clean, and have a defined low end that punches through on the dance floor—so it’s noteworthy that DJ Booth.net’s reviewer said “The Cerwin-Vega! P1500X powered speakers are probably the best speakers that we have reviewed on DJbooth.net thus far in terms of build quality and overall sound quality.” But the exemplary sound, punch, and super-durable construction are also welcome for any pro audio application. England’s prestigious Sound on Sound magazine said that “After working with the P-Series for a while, I’m left with an impression of toughness. They are built and perform solidly, and are capable of banging out loud and clear audio all day and night.” And Strother Bullins described the P-Series in Pro Audio Review as “One of the most impressive and unique portable PA systems…it remains my personal benchmark of what to expect from a truly pro-grade portable PA.” The P-Series family consists of the P1500X (with 1500W peak power, 15" low-frequency driver, 1.75" high-frequency driver, and built-in 3-channel mixer) and the P1800X sub-woofer (with 2000W peak power and 18" low-frequency driver). As Gus Jursch, Acting General Manager for Cerwin-Vega!, states “We’re gratified that the P-Series is gaining such rapid acceptance from such a wide variety of users. It confirms that our decision not to cut corners, and instead focus like a laser on uncompromised performance, was what people truly wanted.” Exoerience the Cerwin-Vega P-Series (don’t worry, we won’t turn them up all the way), as well as other exceptional product highlights from Gibson Brands, at booth #1526.
  23. PRS Guitars’ new S2 Series instruments – the S2 Mira, S2 Starla, and S2 Custom 24 – offer the fit, feel, and attention to detail of PRS craftsmanship in a fresh, straightforward design. Meaning “Stevensville 2,” the S2 Series is named for a second manufacturing line created inside the PRS Stevensville, MD shop that blends new manufacturing techniques with practiced quality control and workmanship to create instruments at a new price point for players. The S2 Series will be in stores in early August and will be made up of the S2 Mira ($1,179), the S2 Starla ($1,249), and the S2 Custom 24 ($1,399). “We are extraordinarily excited about the S2 Series. This has been a textbook example of how a very dedicated team can come together to create not only a fantastic series of guitars, but a state of the art production line to build them on. We look forward to offering this new series of guitars to an expanded artist and customer base while giving our current customers more options,” said Jack Higginbotham, President, PRS Guitars. A diverse group of artists, from Indie to Rock to Punk, have road tested these guitars and found them to embody everything they require in an instrument. S2 Artists include Thomas Fekete from Surfer Blood, Steve Stout from Blondfire, Dave Knudson from Minus the Bear, JJ Grey from MOFRO, Isaac Ellsworth from MoneyPenny, Jesse Lawson from Sleeping with Sirens and more. “This guitar has already changed the way I play. The sounds you can get out of it are incredible. Right out of the box at the house the Starla's were a blast. Even without an amp they're really loud and very easy to play! Probably one of the greatest things about these guitars is that they refuse to go out of tune which is HUGE. Staying in tune is such a big deal for me and having total confidence in a guitar is like having total confidence in the people you play with onstage. I can't say enough about these guitars!” - JJ Grey on his S2 Starla. This significant investment from PRS is the continuation of a long-term plan to diversify the company and its offerings both vertically and horizontally and to supply more artists and players with tools to create music. With their retro-inspired vibe, hallmark PRS quality, and popular pricetag, the S2 Series is perhaps the strongest example of this yet from PRS.
  24. Gibson Pure instrument cables achieve three design goals: quiet operation, tonal excellence, and long life. Thanks to a radical new dialectric design, handling noise—even with high-gain amp setups—is up to 30dB lower across the frequency spectrum when tested against comparably priced cables. And the noise management doesn’t stop there. A unique, spring-loaded bushing stops clicks and buzzes when plugging or unplugging; surrounding the inner cable assembly with an additional semi-conductive PVC shield virtually eliminates noise from static electricity or electro-magnetic fields. In addition to silent operation, cable capacitance was chosen specifically to match the “sweet spot” of magnetic pickups, while the non-metal, insulated hardwood plug end provides a sure, positive grip. An oxygen-free copper conductor and 95% copper braid shield, with plugs featuring military-spec 24 carat gold over nickel, give maximum conductivity, sonic purity, and long life. Finally, Gibson Pure cables are unusually supple, so they lay flat on stage and coil easily—yet thanks to innovative manufacturing techniques and breakthrough engineering, Gibson Pure cables are priced competitively with cables that don’t offer Gibson’s advantages. As Jeff Schroder, lead guitarist for Smashing Pumpkins, says “They sound great and are extremely well-made.” Gibson Pure cables are constructed to exacting standards in the USA, and backed by a lifetime warranty. Experience Gibson Pure cables, as well as other exceptional product highlights from Gibson Brands, at booth #1526.
