  1. A good test would be to run a thick gauge extension cord to that outlet 20 feet away. I have been in clubs where it seemed like somebody's unqualified brother in law did the electrical wiring for the owner. One thing to beware of is ground loop hum from having gear plugged into different outlets on different circuits. And the dreaded RFI interference hum from fluorescent lights as well. Lastly, a power conditioner is cheaper than repair work.
  2. I don't have any guitars with Maple necks. Don't they typically seal them at the factory with lacquer or something?
  3. When I change strings and clean the fretboard I finish with lemon oil.
  4. My stepdad played trumpet in college in various jazz bands for extra cash up in Eerie PA. He gave me his King Professional trumpet from the 50s. After some years I had my horn repairman friend Miles Faherty replate it and presented it back to him. When my little brother's oldest son started playing in school bands, he got it.
  5. I have a Yamaha G60A which I use Savarez strings on (silver wrapped bass strings with a wound G). I played cornet in the Jr High school band (there was no guitar, so I had to pick another instrument). I traded it back a couple years later in high school to Weiss Music for the Yamaha. Same woods as your guitar.
  6. For rock I like the Rodger Nichols work with Steely Dan. For classical music probably the RCA living stereo series.
  7. I watched last night. Was glad to see a mention of Lefty Frizzell. My guitar playing dad and Lefty were boyhood chums in East Texas.
  8. We just added a girl singer to the band and played our first gig with her last Saturday. The tunes I learned for her 1st gig are: Fleetwood Mac - Landslide, Rhiannon and Say you Love Me Linda Ronstadt - When Will I be Loved Zep - Whole Lotta Love Dyer Makr Allman Bros - Whipping Post Yesterday I learned two Journey songs (Don't Stop Believing and Lovin Touchin Squeezin) and today I'll be working up two Queen tunes (We are the Champions and Crazy Little Thing Called Love). We will rehearse the four new songs on Wednesday and perform them at the gig Friday. Edit - here's Whipping Post.

  10. I had that very pair, HR16 and MMT8. Then a lightning storm fried all the memory in my HR 16. So I went down to the public library and checked out a book by Louie Bellson, and programmed his patterns into the HR 16.
  11. Back in the 1980s when I was making 4-track cassette recordings on a Tascam Porta 3 I had a zoom drum machine whose model I don't remember and then I got a Alesis HR 16.

  13. I worked for a company called Rhythm Band for about 15 years as the QC supervisor, and we carried Remo products. One day I looked up as a little guy walked through my work area and it was Remo Belli, heading upstairs for a meeting with our president Bob Bergin. Remo was friendly and a real pleasure to meet. RIP
  14. Years ago I bought an old Gibson tube amp 1958 GA6. the tubes were Sylvania but they had been painted black. My amp tech called them war surplus blackout tubes and said they had been used in military field radios, painted so the glow could not be seen at night.
  15. Here's my Niccolo Paganini story. The virtuoso violinist was put into debtors prison for a time. He did have his violin with him so he could continue to practice. unfortunately the high string broke at some point and he had no replacement. So he had to play those notes way up the neck on the third string. Got rather fluent at it. after his release Niccolo was giving a recital. Lo and behold the high string breaks during the midst of the performance. And he switched effortly over to continue to play out the piece way up the neck on the 3rd string when required. audience gasps in amazement. They said he made a deal with the Devil, ala Robert Johnson I suppose. Nope, he was merely prepared from his time in the jail cell with only 3 strings to work with.
  16. Did you hear about the drummer who locked his keys in the car? Took him hours to get the bass player out.
  17. And it's the same thing with multiple mics on a guitar cab for example. Hey, where did all my bass frequencies go! and I just noticed something rather fascinating about the kick mic on the Glyn Johns illustration. It appears to be micing the shell instead of the head or the beater. not in this context but I have heard about guys doing that before. I think they said that there's a pressure wave that runs along the inside of the shell maybe a half inch or so in distance that's killer for micing. Haven't tried that yet.

  19. For overheads I prefer Glyn Johns to XY or spaced pair. Phil if you use the overheads for your primary picture of the drums you also time-allign the snare and kick to be in phase coherence? if so would you mind saying a few words to the home recordists in our community here about the importance specifically on drums with all the many microphones to get everything in phase coherence.
  20. 1 overhead above the snare and the other equidistant but placed just over the floor tom pointed at the snare?
