Because of the actions of a small organization who used the internet and the press in a very clever manner, the band made national news and attracted the scorn of the people presumed to be their core audience. At the time many people, including their supporters, thought that they were sunk and that would create a true chilling of artistic expression in the US. Or, the marketing people said "Let's run with this!" and... Do they sing political songs, or do they sing other music, and occasionally shoot their mouths off? I mean, to go in the Tom Cruise direction he speaks out about his Scientology stuff, but he hasn't made any movies about it. Of course we all heard about John Travolta's Battlefield Earth, so maybe that's a good thing. What I mean is, there's a difference between using your artistic ability to express your politics, compared to using artistic ability to do non-political stuff and then throw in politics on other grounds in order to generate some headlines.
  2. Originally posted by Jotown Lee, you are missing the bigger point. That a small group of people could literally take away their only means of getting their music out and in effect taking away their ability to make a living is a big deal. As you continued, "they" haven't succeeded in taking away the chicks voice, have "they"?
  3. Originally posted by MrKnobs Yeah, I think it IS a big deal. What this is about is the brainwashing of America, and what now happens to any artist who speaks out against the politics of their demographic. Chilling, really. Terry D. I'm sorry, that's not true. Exactly what is chilling about having a No. 1 chart position. Big punishment there.
  4. Originally posted by jackcheez I think we over report controversy and under report truth. We deserve better but we don't demand it. The media LOVES process stories with no conclusions, because its easier to avoid looking "biased". For instance, right now in Massachusetts, the state Democratic party is gearing up for their convention, where they choose the candidates who will appear on the primary ballot. Because of the bizarre rules of the convention, it's possible that there will be only one candidate to earn ballot placement. Voters? Who are they? Anyway... The dominant story is the ballot rules/convention procedural stuff, with almost no coverage of the candidates' actual proposals and policies.

  6. I've never really thought of "Producer heroes", but the first thing to pop into my head is that I really admire Teo Macero's work with Miles Davis, especially now that you can hear the "Complete Session" box sets and realize what brilliant work it took to consolidate all of that outstanding raw material into an LP format.
