  1. Inspired by audionet's recent posts, I digged out a few of my jams with Dave over the last while. Like many of his friends here, I'm in awe of mrsully's skills and good taste in creating music and putting it all together in his home studio. The dude is simply awesome.

I'm hardly worthy of putting tracks on his stuff but my repetitive and predictable noodling has been welcomed in the gentle and forgiving environment of HCEG so it's all good. :smiley-eatdrink004:

  2. As someone who, when he chooses to, has a knack for barely toeing the line (while appearing to some to be getting out of it), jj is one of the best qualified to judge if someone is really breaking the rules in a way that hurts this place. He posseses an uncanny ability to read people's intents and where they're heading to. He's a smart dude. So I vote YES! :thu:

  3. Amen, brother. An aesthetic blunder on an otherwise beautiful guitar, even if not to my taste.

This particular shape is often seen on high end guitars and many say they dislike it. Personally, I can't find anything ugly in it. I like it a lot, actually. My lag Louisiane has that shape as well.

  4. I don't know what it is, but I can be really obdurate (as many of you know).

I had been hearing people go on and on about Richard Thompson for years. I had listened to a bit of it, too, but it never really did anything for me.

Finally saw him in concert maybe 6 months or so ago.

    I don't get it.

Don't misunderstand. I'm not saying he's not everything his fans say he is, but I left scratching my head wondering what all the fuss is about. That show just left me cold, and I really wanted to like him.

I hope nobody thinks I'm bashing the guy, because that's not it at all. Just wondering what I am missing that I can't appreciate somebody who is by all accounts one of the great talents of out time.

It says more about you than about R. Thompson. It means you are not someone who simply jump on the bandwagon. Good for you. :thu:

  5. From my experience, it can grow on you. I used to ponder if I'd sell my LP when I didn't bond with it enough and found it ackward ergonomically, etc. but i kept it and found myself playing it more and more regularily. Somehow, I find it more confortable to play than I used to and it gets the same love as the others. great guitar.

  6. Is there a BASS you don't want? My guess (and I may be guessing wrong) is that with basses, you might have more specific taste/need/requirements about what really works for you making some basses nice to own, maybe, but uninteresting to play for an experienced bass player who knows exactly what he likes.

My guess comes from my own experience: I would enjoy just about any electric guitar and explore them, etc. but there are high end acoustic guitars that, even if you gave them to me, they would collect dust in my house.

  7. Amazingly, my first good guitar would have made me rich if i had kept it and sold it for its vintage market value later. This Gibson SG custom was already "old" when I bought it in the early 70's. I was about 17 years old. I paid something like $500 CAN and sold it for as cheap a couple of years later because... i didn't like the neck.

  8. Best bang/buck ratio is
    Big Muddy
(formerly Mid-Missouri). They aren't the prettiest mandos, but they're solid-wood, American-made instruments that sound great.

F-style mandos are generally far more expensive than A-style, and the scroll and points contribute nothing to the tone. They do look pretty, though.

That's seems like a really good tip. :thu:

  9. I would say from my experience that "A" mandolins are a safer bet than "F" mandolins if you want the best bang for your buck. I have an "F" mandolin that I paid rather a lot for ($600) and it's not that good. I would have been happier with a simpler body style but a better instrument.
