  1. I have similar people in my life, I love to hang out or go out and drink with them, but I can't be in a band with them. Mostly because they just aren't on the same genre or skill level. What sucks is that one in particular wants to start a band together but he just doesn't have the chops and I don't see him ever being more than a basement-level player. I've never had the heart to tell him that, so I just make excuses about not enough time for another project.
  2. Whelp, it turned out to be a huge turnout, I was surprised as anyone haha. Something quite unique happened too. We use a Mackie mixer, one of the models that has an iPad dock where the iPad controls everything. Apparently our sound guy never thought to change the default password for the software, so imagine our surprise when our sound went goofy and one of our mic's started feeding back, our singer noticed a guy in the audience with an iPad.. called him out. Apparently the guy hacked into our sound and thought he could do a better job and just took over using the default password to get into our settings. It got tense when the singer berated and trashed the guy in front of the whole bar, but apparently this guy backed off and stopped. Then this 'sound guy' had the audacity to post a response on our FB page - a "review" of our gig, where he said the band was really good, but that our sound needed work and then promoted his next gig as a sound guy in the review. We debated showing up and confronting him, then decided it wasn't worth it, but of all the things in the world to go wrong at a gig, who ever expected this to happen? Who brings an ipad to a bar with the hopes and intentions of taking over their sound control?? Which concerns me greatly.. many guitar pedals are bluetooth now.. and many have no security whatsoever.. how can I stop people from showing up at a gig and hacking into my pedals? What a crazy world we live in.
  3. So we got a gig coming up next week. Bars around here are allowed to open to 75% capacity. The bar has been harping on us almost daily about how many people we're going to bring 🙄 to the point that I'm no longer even looking forward to playing there. Oh yea, and NO FREE BEER.
  4. My band started rehearsals during the summer after the initial 'wave' of the pandemic simmered down. We're on hiatus again since this 2nd / 3rd surge doesn't seem to be slowing down I miss rehearsals the most. We haven't gigged since just before Covid hit back in February. I guess the silver lining is that we've consistently added new songs and since we don't rehearse together as much, everyone has been extra prepared and we've replaced nearly our entire set list with all new material. How are you guys faring?
  5. We're renaming right now and here's the frontrunners: The Effin Band Faceplant Crowd Sourcers Side Effects The guys chose one of them- Side Effects, which is the one I least care for, lol. What do you guys think?
  6. Very Informative Craig! One thing I wanted to add is that the DIgitech GSP line has a setting in the unit that shapes the signal based on the type of amp, such as SS stack, Tube Combo, Tube Stack, etc.. that can make all the difference in the world- as these units do not come out of the box preset to work with tube amps. The usually come with the cabinet simulators turned on, and the shaping set to direct (PA), and when plugged through a guitar amp, as you know, sounds like garbage! I didn't realize the part about the input levels, but have had that digital distortion (I called it digital artifacting, not realizing what was causing it) - I chased a lot of dead ends trying to rectify it, including selling off an active pickup guitar that seemed to have more trouble in that area than the others. Now I will be checking my levels and hopefully improving my tone. Good times!
  7. ...and prior to the 'new' forums, I had 10,000+ posts, and then it was knocked down to somewhere around 4k .. PFFT!
  8. I have delusional aspirations, so yeah, when I look in the mirror, there's always some delusional guy looking back at me
  9. I'm pretty sure that when a bunch of guys sat around and decided that they were going to form an 80's glam metal band and to make it obnoxious and offensive, that everyone rolled their eyes at them too. And now we have Steel Panther
  10. I used to come here more often back from '97-'07 or so. The 'new' forum really did kill 75% or more of the regulars, but I mostly stopped coming daily because I generally browse here during work and back then I had boring tech support jobs with downtime. Now I'm higher up the chain and am always busy. I still play in the same coverband as 10 years ago, still chase gear and tone, just don't get to chat about it as much! Also, it's kind of lonely in here too
  11. OP - It's awful. You need to really listen to what your band is doing and if you can't hear what's wrong, then all hope is lost regardless.... just the fact that you not only uploaded this to youtube, but actually enrolled in some contest tells me that you have no idea just how awful you are. I don't know which person you are in the video, but I could point out at least 5 points of necessary improvement on each member, starting with musicianship being the number 1 issue equally needing attention from all of you. Work out the kinks - get it together, get a better recording, and get back to us. It will take time and dedication, but ask yourself this: Knowing it could take a year or more to get this band capable of doing high quality gigs, with countless hours of practicing and rehearsals each and ever week, do you have what it takes to follow through and take control of the situation and make it better? Do you have enough of an ear to hear what's wrong? Can you learn from other bands what does and doesn't work (at shows, not on the interwebz) ?? It takes dedication and work to make a solid gig-worthy band, and it takes a lot of patience and compassion, and compromise to keep a working band together. It's not easy, and it's not all fairy tales. It's 90% work for 10% reward. If you find the reward is more than 10%, you are either doing something wrong, or you are a blockbuster platinum artist and wouldn't need my lousy opinion. This was not meant to be incendiary or mean, just openly, and brutally honest. I wish you the best of luck.
