1. Okay, realize these are full bore sunlight photos designed to demonstrate the finish is not painted. I didn't enhance them or retouch other than crop them. This is an angle shot that clearly shows the grain through the translucent finish. I suspect they are using an oxblood stain here because it looks a lot like my Oxblood Flying V. Black for all intents and purposes, but deep, deep red under a carbon arc lighting. That's a beautiful finish. That's what I was hoping for and expecting. Well, 24 hours to go and the DC HB and DC P-90 show up. So we'll be digging into some backs tomorrow.
2. If MF would have shown this: and you get this: I would get mad... But if they show you this: and you get something like this: I would not because it is close enough, maybe darker, but still, close... MF did not make a mistake, they show a pic, you chose to assume that they were wrong and it was going to be a "clearer" dark back... imho... One thing... if you are thinking about returning it because of this, maybe you could sell it to a forumite that missed the sale... Don't agree. Black and Darkback aren't the same thing even from MF's site (as I posted above) "here's a side by side" It won't piss me off enough (most likely) to return it. But there is still a big big difference between a Gibson "dark back" and a black back. On a dark back you can still easily see wood grain, on black, of course you can't. And I've bought enough guitar off of Sweetwater's gallery to know that what they show there as a dark back would actually be darker in person, so I wouldn't expect that either. And as you can see in my side by side from MF's webshots, their depiction of dark back shows red and brown hues. Black is technically the absence of color. The pigment from which no color of the light spectrum escapes. i.e. the black hole of colors. So if they advertise "dark back" and either the DC LP P-90 or HB show up black, then either Gibson or MF has misidentified the colors. I don't name them, Gibson does. This could give a guy, The Darkback Blues.
3. I just picked my GT up at work today. It is exactly as shown on the MF website. It says "dark back" on the box, but it is in fact a solid black back and neck. Sort of like a Joe Bonamassa P90 DC LP. Now all I have to do is put black covers on the pickups and mismatch the knobs. But see, MF actually didn't show a black back. Here's the DC Goldtop It's a dark depiction, but you can see the reddish browns especially on the neck. Again, compare that with a pic this time from MF of the Joe Bonamassa Studio which is indeed black, and you can see the difference. Here's a side by side There is a difference between Gibson's "darkback" and "black-back" so I'd say MF got it wrong. I think we might be discovering why these were on the SDOTD. The must have been a run of off-colored backs from the Gibson factory. Box says "darkback" but guitar is "black-back".
4. BTW. The SDOTD was the one with a DARK BACK... http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guitars/gibson-les-paul-double-cutaway-p-90-electric-guitar Maybe you got confused with the pic that GAS MAN posted: Ah, well that's a bummer. I was hoping the one I posted was going to be more accurate. On the MF site it said dark back, but you couldn't really tell the hue of the color from their webshots at MF, but it didn't look jet black their either. The one I posted (which I hoped would give a better depiction) was off of a Japanese site. I have one coming too and I'd have preferred that translucent finish. But "dark back" is not supposed to mean black like the Joe Bonamassa Studio (I have one of those too) Example, this is a "darkback" off of a Gibson Custom Shop VOS 1957 Les Paul Goldtop Darkback Of course the bright studio light SW uses always lighten the hues a bit. But the "darkback" is name used by Gibson to contrast with their mahogany colored backs. In contrast the Joe Bonamassa has a black back, no getting around that. That's what they call it here, "black-back" http://www2.gibson.com/Products/Electric-Guitars/Les-Paul/Gibson-USA/Joe-Bonamassa-Les-Paul-Studio.aspx So anyway, if these are showing up black instead of "darkback" then it's MF's screw-up for not having used correct specification AGAIN!

6. Yeah, a bunch of dang soothsayers we are It's only 1:53 AM my time, but I woke up and had to check to see if we'd guessed it right. Looks kinda like a graham cookie with icing don't it?
7. I called with no luck! I placed my order with MF now and it is processed... I wish I would have known about Mr. Rebates before! How do you know with Mr. Rebates whether or not the item (brand) is excluded? I'm signed up with them, but I'd rather not go through them unless I know if it's going to give me the kickback.
8. I left the comments blank, it still didn't go through. I just now called it in and got the match - 10%. That finally put me over the edge, happy birthday (next week) to me...... That's a great score. I wish I could do the same, but I need to use my MF 0% card so I can pay it off next August (2012). Without that, it would be like adding $1200 back on in interest charges since I'm strapped until then. But good for you!
9. Maybe, maybe not. From what I've seen, Gibson double cuts don't have the greatest resale value (at least not compared to more 'traditional' Gibson models). That is very true. I did decide, however, to pull the trigger even though I have a '60s Trib GT but yeah, there are more quality appointments to this guitar (versus the Tributes) and with all the Gibsons I've bought (including 21 LPs including JRs and Spc's) this will be my first DC LP Gibson. I decided this was a good opportunity to try one out. But if tomorrow the HB version is on SDOTD, I may have an aneurysm trying to figure out what to do.
10. Wow. Im on the fence for two of these. Dont think you can get hurt at this price. I think the only question is that one can score a Goldtop Tribute for $750, so is this one worth the extra $250. Better finish, yes, better select woods, yes, better case, yes - I think it's - it's - distracting me this morning.
11. Monster Cable Power Pro 800 Power Conditioner $54.95 ($25 off) http://www.americanmusical.com/Item--i-MON-PRO800?src=W0808NDNENEWDAYP plus you could price match these and do a little bit better at M123. http://www.music123.com/Accessories/Power-Batteries/Power-Conditioners/PRO-800-High-Performance-PowerCenter.site7prod182657.product
12. That's a sweet guitar, does anyone have a code that works on it? I woke up 6 AM PT went straight to the computer and scoped out the SDOTD - so I'm contemplating this deal - it's a heckuva deal - but I'd be more tempted if it had dual controls. Without that it really limits the middle position. I was playing with one of my P-90 Tributes last night and noticing that If I wanted to warm up the bridge p'up, it didn't take much neck p'up blending in at all before it started to sound a bit muddy. So a single set of vol/tone would make this more or a bridge OR neck guitar. But still a sweet deal for $999. It's interesting how blase' we've gotten over the last two years to Gibson goldtops. It used to be that the sight of any Gibson goldtop under $2K made a GAS'r absolutely lose it. The Tribute series has changed that. Well, I'll think about this one a bit more.
13. ^I've sent them at least 3 requests for price match through their "beat this price" system and NEVER have gotten a response. I think I once got some Snarkys on that deal real cheap, but I did that on the phone. I sent them an e-mail asking them why they don't respond and they replied back saying "I don't know why". "Response Via Email(Christian) - 08/09/2011 08:24 PM Dear Musician, We are terribly sorry that those requests have not gotten answered and we aren't sure why they haven't come to us. However if you would like to have us check one out we would be more than happy to do it if you respond to this email." And of course by that time, the SDOTD are over.
14. Picked up the Gibson LP Special Exclusive model with HSC in Alpine White from MF for $679 calling in using the VIP coupon. This guitar was selling for $!299 last week! http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guitars/gibson-les-paul-special-single-cutaway That's a totally awesome score And white is possibly my favorite LP Special color.
15. I think this is cute and won't break the bank, problem is getting the free shipping Big Heart Bottleneck Glass Guitar Slide $7.95 Reg: $12.00 http://www.americanmusical.com/RSS_Feeds/Ndnd.aspx You'd have to buy 4 of them to get free shipping or add it to other items. One thing you could do is have Zzounds price match/beat it, and then you'd have it available at the new deal price at Zz for up to 5 business days in case you think of strings or something else you want. But I'd be getting one if I could get it for 8 bucks shipped.
16. Crap the RD's are still available, me buying one of these guitars will/would make absolutley no sense...I cannot justify it:facepalm: Justifications are over-rated. Rationalizations however are better than sex. Think about it, have you ever gone a week without a rationalization? Add one dollar to your order and get interest free financing for 12 months. That's one of the rationalizations I used, so I added a capo. I wanted one more anyway. One for the office one for the front room. It's not like I want to have to get up.
17. I decided against it since I just bought a LP with BB Pros in it a few weeks ago. I wouldn't really gain much other than the weight of the guitar and an offset body. Then I'd have to send the LP back. If it was the amber finish, the LP might be on it's way back already. Yeah, I agree with both of you, the amber is quite a bit better looking IMO. If the amber comes up for sale in the next week, I'll send the ebony back. BUT I wouldn't be surprised if that doesn't happen if the amber is the better seller of the two. This was a great deal since it was $300 off of what was already $500 off. So a $800 off leaves $700, that's a good sale! But I don't necessarily agree that they would use better woods on the trans amber, you'd think they would, but I've seen plenty of Gibson arrive where I thought "Now why didn't they make that one a solid color? So I figure at least with the ebony, I won't have to worry about one with bad grain matching showing up and having to "bless and forgive it" or hope for a successful return. But despite my worry there, I'll still take a chance on an amber if it becomes the SDOTD soon.
18. Are those things any good? They just look like glorified gig bags with extra seams for $200. What am I missing here? Actually, it looks pretty cool. I just got done watching there demo here http://www.monocase.com/mono-electric-guitar.asp But it's probably more than I need from a gigbag. Mine mostly function as dust covers cuz my guitars aren't going anywhere. (i.e. as in off to gig) But I guess if someone was also routinely going to lessons it would be a great bag.
19. I've only named TWO Guitars My first Les Paul I named "Lester", and that was actually original for me, but of course I've come to find that it is oh so common And then I got myself one of these and my wife and I began calling it "Big Red". But I own a lot more than those two guitars, but only two were deserving of the anthropomorphism.
20. Or Charlie? That's my typical reaction to Palin as well.
21. TMZ has learned that Mel Gibson went on a rampage when he was arrested Friday on suspicion of drunk driving, hurling religious epithets. TMZ has also learned that the Los Angeles County Sheriff's department had the initial report doctored to keep the real story under wraps. TMZ has four pages of the original report prepared by the arresting officer in the case, L.A. County Sheriff's Deputy James Mee. According to the report, Gibson became agitated after he was stopped on Pacific Coast Highway and told he was to be detained for drunk driving Friday morning in Malibu. The actor began swearing uncontrollably. Gibson repeatedly said, "My life is f****d." Law enforcement sources say the deputy, worried that Gibson might become violent, told the actor that he was supposed to cuff him but would not, as long as Gibson cooperated. As the two stood next to the hood of the patrol car, the deputy asked Gibson to get inside. Deputy Mee then walked over to the passenger door and opened it. The report says Gibson then said, "I'm not going to get in your car," and bolted to his car. The deputy quickly subdued Gibson, cuffed him and put him inside the patrol car. TMZ has learned that Deputy Mee audiotaped the entire exchange between himself and Gibson, from the time of the traffic stop to the time Gibson was put in the patrol car, and that the tape fully corroborates the written report. Once inside the car, a source directly connected with the case says Gibson began banging himself against the seat. The report says Gibson told the deputy, "You mother f****r. I'm going to f*** you." The report also says "Gibson almost continually [sic] threatened me saying he 'owns Malibu' and will spend all of his money to 'get even' with me." The report says Gibson then launched into a barrage of anti-Semitic statements: "F*****g Jews... The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world." Gibson then asked the deputy, "Are you a Jew?" The deputy became alarmed as Gibson's tirade escalated, and called ahead for a sergeant to meet them when they arrived at the station. When they arrived, a sergeant began videotaping Gibson, who noticed the camera and then said, "What the f*** do you think you're doing?" A law enforcement source says Gibson then noticed another female sergeant and yelled, "What do you think you're looking at, sugar tits?" We're told Gibson took two blood alcohol tests, which were videotaped, and continued saying how "f****d" he was and how he was going to "f***" Deputy Mee. Gibson was put in a cell with handcuffs on. He said he needed to urinate, and after a few minutes tried manipulating his hands to unzip his pants. Sources say Deputy Mee thought Gibson was going to urinate on the floor of the booking cell and asked someone to take Gibson to the bathroom. After leaving the bathroom, Gibson then demanded to make a phone call. He was taken to a pay phone and, when he didn't get a dial tone, we're told Gibson threw the receiver against the phone. Deputy Mee then warned Gibson that if he damaged the phone he could be charged with felony vandalism. We're told Gibson was then asked, and refused, to sign the necessary paperwork and was thrown in a detox cell. Deputy Mee then wrote an eight-page report detailing Gibson's rampage and comments. Sources say the sergeant on duty felt it was too "inflammatory." A lieutenant and captain then got involved and calls were made to Sheriff's headquarters. Sources say Mee was told Gibson's comments would incite a lot of "Jewish hatred," that the situation in Israel was "way too inflammatory." It was mentioned several times that Gibson, who wrote, directed, and produced 2004's "The Passion of the Christ," had incited "anti-Jewish sentiment" and "For a drunk driving arrest, is this really worth all that?" We're told Deputy Mee was then ordered to write another report, leaving out the incendiary comments and conduct. Sources say Deputy Mee was told the sanitized report would eventually end up in the media and that he could write a supplemental report that contained the redacted information -- a report that would be locked in the watch commander's safe. Initially, a Sheriff's official told TMZ the arrest occurred "without incident." On Friday night, Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore told TMZ: "The L.A. County Sheriff's Department investigation into the arrest of Mr. Gibson on suspicion of driving under the influence will be complete and will contain every factual piece of evidence. Nothing will be sanitized. There was absolutely no favoritism shown to this suspect or any other. When this file is presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney, it will contain everything. Nothing will be left out." On Saturday, Gibson released the following statement: "After drinking alcohol on Thursday night, I did a number of things that were very wrong and for which I am ashamed. I drove a car when I should not have, and was stopped by the LA County Sheriffs. The arresting officer was just doing his job and I feel fortunate that I was apprehended before I caused injury to any other person. I acted like a person completely out of control when I was arrested, and said things that I do not believe to be true and which are despicable. I am deeply ashamed of everything I said. Also, I take this opportunity to apologize to the deputies involved for my belligerent behavior. They have always been there for me in my community and indeed probably saved me from myself. I disgraced myself and my family with my behavior and for that I am truly sorry. I have battled with the disease of alcoholism for all of my adult life and profoundly regret my horrific relapse. I apologize for any behavior unbecoming of me in my inebriated state and have already taken necessary steps to ensure my return to health." 22. :thu:I own a bit over 100 guitars and one of the latest guitars I bought was my second C-1 Classic. I got my first one, an antique amber, used from a local music store. It has the earlier design with the '59 in the neck. But when they went on sale at AMS for $499, I couldn't resist picking up the trans blue with the Jazz in the neck. They've also added the tusq nut, locking tuners and more of an abalone-esque color to the neck inlay. I do find them to be a bit heavy, but despite that and being neck through, I still find them to be full of tone. I think of them of being a very good import value that rivals some of the popular US model solid bodies, especially when cost is factored in. I thought I'd really prefer the Jazz in the neck, but the '59 is also a great compliment to their design features. I can't decide, but I might actually have a slight pref for the '59 on this guitar, but it's definitely a difference of a bit more phat (59) versus a bit more clarity and vibe (Jazz). I found '59s to be muddy sounding on some guitars, but not on this model. So either config is a win in my book. I've posted this deal in the "Great Deals" thread and wonder why more of our HCEG Alums aren't snapping these up. N'joy!
23. Why bother... Hey, that was fine with me. I'm in my early 50s and the Green Day CD was the only one nominated that I'd bought. Endless downward spiraling rehashings from Clapton and U2 aren't necessarily my thing. But like a local radio show pointed out, Neil Young was was just awarded his first ever Grammy and it was for something like "Boxed CD Packaging?". http://www.nme.com/news/neil-young/49505 With Neil Young receiving just that 1 in his lifetime, and Beyonce' receiving 6 in just one night, well Grammies
24. They have Spike, they have. A shade of pink anyway: The tone is in the thong?
25. I answered "NO" but I finger pick almost all of the time. But it's already been said, "there's different styles". Although I love to play with my fingernails, I'm also not as good a flatpicker as others. No matter what style you approach, you'll be trading something off. And of course for some styles like tremolo picking or power chord riffing, I'm likely to reach for a pick. No matter what, I find a big tone difference between my finger picking and flat picking. But Mark Knopfler has always been a bit of a enigma to me because that man can get such a sharp percussive attack from his fingers. Maybe that's part of the reason his sig guitar is ash.
