1. The purfling on the top was bugging me so I tried to rout it out but it didn't work out as planned and I had to bend a couple of new binding strips. The issue was that the set screw for my routing jig shook loose and bit into the top, so I also had to fashion a small patch:
2. I’ve been doing final sanding and filling flaws, refining the neck and put on a spit coat of shellac. The purfling on the top still bugs me though but structurally it’s good to go.
3. I haven’t been back to this forum in a long time so this is the first I’m hearing this. My condolences to her friends and family. She will be missed.
4. Yeah, well good thing I'm middle aged and homely; nobody is going to be watching my videos on YouTube. 😉
5. Thx. This is stuff that should be taught in school IMO.
6. TBH I'm still very foggy on copyrights. I see people posting covers all over social media and I know it's not legal.
7. Well, it could be better. I won't bring up politics our moan about feeling isolated but suffice it to say it's not something new to me. My family is mostly well, though I have two loved ones who I can't be with and they are struggling with being isolated from us - but again I won't go into it. My wife's job is doing very well, we're not facing economic hardship or going hungry and quite frankly I feel like I'm finally able to enjoy a simpler life. Musically speaking I've set up a desk in the spare bedroom and bought a digital interface, a mic boom for my large condenser microphone and (with a room humidifier running constantly) I have several guitars hanging on the wall for easy access. The only difficulty I'm having is having time to set aside where I am able to play without disturbing the rest of my family. Typically it's after my wife's business hours and before she goes to bed at night. My younger son is typically done with school by 3pm. Before that I have to be quiet - even when doing house work; my wife is constantly on Webex for work. So right now I'm tweaking settings in Reaper as a DAW and OBS, which I am using to set up for streaming and recording audio and video simultaneously. I'm also on the fence whether to play cover songs or focus on improvising as a means of songwriting.
8. Will there be a new thread tomorrow? Santa brought me a Focusrite Scarlet 2i2 and I'm struggling to get my laptop set up. I just need to set up the spare bedroom and find a good time to make noise without disrupting the rest of my family. They can only take my playing in small doses!
9. I've got the bending form and mold done. I'm shifting focus now to the sanding drum for the sides so that I can get it down to a uniform .1" thick. I use the hot pipe for binding but I'm debating on using it for the sides.
10. I actually think the idea of a voice over is not a bad idea. There’s a more experienced luthier on YouTube that does that - though you can tell he reads from a script and isn’t doing a true “play by play.” Public speaking doesn’t come naturally for some but I recall in my speech communications class in college that it’s best to know the topic well enough and using flash cards as a prompt to “audible” from.
11. I did try making some videos. I don’t do monologue well. Maybe I need to write myself a script and use flash cards. My generation is scared of public speaking.
12. Yup. I gave them three strikes. I view my warnings as gaslighting so I won’t give them the satisfaction of wasting any more time on them. At this point, I’d rather just start a blog or an Instagram Story or even a YouTube Series.
13. I bought a cheap table saw at Harbor Freight along with enough plywood to make 8 sections that I could replicate using a flush cut router bit. I also took some hole cutouts that I had left over from making my wife a wine rack and decided to start making a bobbin for a drum sander. I dismantled one of my son's fidget spinners to recycle the bearing to use as mounting points. I ordered another set of sitka that along with the side slats I intend to use the drum sander upon. First Now I need to take the cutouts and make a bending form. Again, I need to use the flush cut router bit to make it all uniform. The way I see it I have about 1/8" of wiggle room for the bending forms and the outside mold. It doesn't need to be perfect; the wood will do what it wants to do regarding spring back.
14. Tell that to the mods at AGF. They have been not been so understanding. They are so uptight over there that even if I type in "****" they assume that I'm not following the rules. yesterday I posted a new thread about a social media app that is popular with people born after 1980 and they assumed I wanted it to go political even though I clearly said is so many words "please don't discuss anything political about the app I just want to know if you see any value in it as a form of self promotion" but they deleted the thread and PM'd me with a warning saying that I was being sneaky about trying to post a political thread. SMH. Whatever, boomers.
15. Thanks. That was a long time ago, but I still play it every so often. The top - and tone - on that Larrivee has also darkened considerably. I need to make an updated recording before I get my post Corona haircut.
16. I haven't recorded and posted anything to my YouTube channel in the longest time but here's a blast from the past when I was doing the local open mic over a decade ago. LOL - Corona has brought the mop back.
17. There's nothing to report other than some housekeeping. I don't suggest anybody here buy some French PED so I'm reported it. In the meantime, I've been sanding and filling gaps and body with a mixture of sawdust and thin CA glue. I've also been truing up the blank for the alternate neck. In doing so, I've been looking at my first build closely. The neck itself is VERY heavy but otherwise stable. I've been refraining from going at it with a spokeshave; I still don't know how to use one properly. I also noticed that the neck angle is off after 7 years so I need to address that. I've never thought it of as being 100% "done." The French polish has held up very well and the bridge has stayed firm so that's a good sign. I'll be experimenting with medium gauge Elixir Nanowebs on it. I'll get my Triscuits and wine out in celebration once that's accomplished. BTW, #3 is also moving forward somewhat. The back is I've been working on making a bending form and outside mold for an OM based off my Larrivee and my sides are waiting to be bent - something that I'm not equipped to do. I was hoping to make a Fox bender but even the blanket and steel slats are a bit pricey. My wife is working from home and likely won't be funding that since she witnessed USPS dropping off boxes from StewMac and RC Tonewoods so I'm probably going to have to put this aside and finally lay the porcelain time in her bathroom retreat and have a contractor come and put French doors on her adopted home office.
18. To quote Rosanne Rosanna Danna, "It's always something!" The neck angle is set and the fretboard surface is flat but but the headstock is slightly too thin and twisted. I'm hoping that the addition of a back plate will somehow at least partly correct the issue. I also have the nut slot cut and a heel cap ready to install. I need to rout the truss rod channel slightly deeper though. If it all comes to naught, I have another blank all ready to go.
19. Zombie bump. It’s May. Too late?
20. OMG. Sorry so salty! It's this social distancing. I've haven't slipped like this since my Navy days!
21. I wish spring would get here. I like doing this type of work outside in the sun. My basement is cluttered and dark. I'm still working on the mold and bending forms. I have three outlines cut on my 9" bandsaw so far. It isn't the best but I need the practice.
22. How long will this thread be open? I'm actually working on an original in honor of World Autism Awareness Month and fleshing out the lyrics. I had a bit of a "breakthrough" last night with a melody for the refrain but as always am struggling with making the lyrics too wordy and trite. Also, with everyone being home and under foot I don't have the freedom to just sit and play during the day without causing a ruckus for others or competing with the television in the evening. Of course, I have a cover of Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" on hand but you guys are better than that. ;o)
23. For years, apparently too. I turned 50 last year. I'd really like a new Martin 00 or 000 - but I'm choosing to build it myself with parts purchased from the Guitar Maker's Connection along with materials from elsewhere. I see the saying over at AGF that it's better to be a player rather than a "polisher" but it doesn't apply if you make the sawdust yourself IMHO.
24. I've been playing around with iMovie on my iPhone a lot:
