  1. I bet that converter does an excellent job, so do you run that through the optical input?
  2. Not sure if it is a weakness, per se >> since no client has asked for certain plugins or editing --but, we do not have a PC/Mac in the studio..Still strictly all Roland Daw I use the Roland 2480 and a computer in my studio. To be honest the 2480 does the vast majority of the work and the clients are always happy with its results. That unit is highly under appreciated. So do you use Roland mmp-2's with it, if you do you can run them through optical inputs and get better track separation.
  3. I used to be a bit week getting vocals to fit in the mix nice, I got a partner to help me monitor mixes for a while and now I am much better.
  4. I found that I used some guide sheets to help me get started with EQ then I go with my ears for the rest. So far over the past few years it has worked well.
  5. I remember when I stoped recording people for free....I still charge a very low rate (I like to help artists that can't afford a expensive studio).
  6. I used to be lazy at recording vocals. I would accept good enough and never push for better when I knew I could. In order to improve I started recording my vocal tracks with my guitarist helping me (he is a good producer and he helps push me to make things what they could be with more effort). Since I have been working with him I have found that I now also go the extra mile and no longer accept what I would call "good enough". Now I push for what I know I can achieve even if it takes many more hours.
  7. I think he was too excited to hit any punctuation keys.
  8. HOw do you make the animated avatars? What program are you using?
  9. Thanks for sharing the POD is very underrated, the key is taking the necessary time to make it work for each persons particular needs. Personaly I usualy have presets, after modifacation (for hours) I was able to make many awsome patches that work for me. Also don't forget to try new things such as running it through an amp while the unit is set on direct.

  11. You guys should check out Tape op issue 55 page 40. It discusses The Curtains using POD units to record with. I found the tracks to sound very good on the CD. I never use the POD to record direct, but I may have to try it again sometime.
  12. For the record I never use the POD to record direct, I don't like the sound that way. Now if you run it through a nice amp you can get some great tones. I also find it to lack a little in the low end for distortion, but then again I do not have the metal pack. I also heard that having a graphic EQ in the signal chain will make a significant difference. I use it mostly for nice clean tones through my amp.
  13. Originally posted by Fletcher@mercenary.com The guitar sound in the room is EVERYTHING!!! I have never heard anything come out of a "POD" that I considered to be of even marginal use. Back when I was working on the last "King's X" record Ty Tabor had been using the Line 6 crap for damn near everything. We tried it. The producer [Michael Wagener] waited until we had something close to decent, then plugged in one of his amps to one of his speaker cabinets and the difference was "night and day". No {censored}. The POD crap is fine for quick writing demos but it is absolutely unuseable for making records if you're looking for a guitar sound that actually sounds like a real guitar. Yeah, they're fine for people who are either too lazy or ignorant to make a guitar sound great in the room and then record that sound but the {censored} will never "sound like a record" it will always "sound like demo". The comment about getting the speaker cabinet off the floor and away from the walls was one of the best ones in this thread. What you're doing by getting the cabinet off the floor is keeping the cabinet from coupling with the floor and creating a false sense of low end in the room. Once you get the actual sound of the guitar coming from the speakers then all you need to do is put a microphone in front of it [57's and/or 58's are fine for the task] and hit record. If you move the mic more towards the center [dust cap] of the speaker the sound will get brighter... if you move the mic more towards the surround of the speaker the sound will get thicker. If you move the microphone towards the grill cloth the sound will get thicker [greater proximity effect from a cardioid microphone as you get closer to the source tone] if you move the speaker away from the cabinet the sound will get thinner [not necessarily brighter but definitely less bottom due to the decrease in proximity effect]. The key to the whole guitar sound thing is to be recording a great player. Guitar sounds start and the hands and go down hill from there. Recording engineers do not "get" guitar sounds, recording engineers "capture" guitar sounds and store them in a place where they can be played back later. The equipment is a tool, and the engineer is an operator of the tools so the sound can be captured... but before it can be captured it must be created. The sound starts with the player as engineers can indeed gloss things up a bit or cover some of the dodgy parts but overall we don't do alchemy and can't create a sound. Best of luck with all you do!! ...my apologies for the rant. I can't believe it for the first time I dissagree with you. I have gotten great sounds out of the POD when running it through a amp and recording the traditional way with a mic on the cab. I have never had a client complain. Maybe the setup you had was not good for the application or the POD was not tweeked to produce a good sound. I have gotten excellent results running the POD through a amp (now I would not use it to record direct).
  14. Check the all about POD forum, it will help. First of all I like the POD XT and I have gotten excellent results with it. For live work it is great, now for recording I never use it direct. Run it through a amp and mic it and you will get much better results. Also try everything you can, for example I use my pod set on direct through my amp for the best results (which many people don't even try). I have been told many times that people love the tones I get and I have never heard any complaints, heck in many cases you most likely never knew I used the POD. Just remember dont record direct with it or it will sound fake. For the price it is a very good tool.
  15. For me it depends on the artist, sometimes I like the produced well sometimes it just does not fit the band. FOr example a highly over produced Nirvana CD would suck.
  16. Thats not a groupie that is a relationship!!!
  17. First do not bring the boyfriend if you want to get back stage. Second send us a few pics of yourself so we can further evaluate. Third if you look good come to my show, I will take you back stage and we will...talk.................

  19. Boss BR8, in clean and near mint condition. Manual and VHS turbo start included.
