  1. I think it all depends on the style of music. If it's a singer-songwriter a song should probably have some kind of imagery that the listener can relate to, even if the words themselves don't flow into a single narrative. If it's something where the music overpowers the words, like in rock or metal, the lyrics are just there. They don't have to be poignant or intellectual. A death metal band could scream "I'm a Little Teapot" and it wouldn't matter as long as they had brutal guitars and fast drums.
