Sweat/oil from a person's hands can also be very acidic. I can't imagine this is good for wood.

Definately boutique/custom brand. I think of Suhr/Carvin/etc. On the other hand, big brands like Jackson, Fender, Gibson, Kramer, etc. were boutique brands at one time in their history.

I would start by learning basic arpeggios. Mastering 120 of these alone can take years and years.
