Pre-cut nuts, imo, are the way to go.
I can. It's the best way to deal with one or two slots that are too deep. any more than that, just make a new nut. Put the baking soda in the slot and apply a SMALL drop of CA. It sets up NOW!
BTW I'm having good luck with corian. You can get 2" square samples at Lowe's, Homeboy's, etc. for free. You have to have a vice and a hackwaw to make the blanks, but corian is good {censored}, Maynard. I haz one customer who was burning thru nuts because of his insane whammy use. I put a Corian nut on his geetar and haven't seen him in a year. Well I actually saw him last nite and he's still raving about his nuts (DON'T GO THERE!!!!!eek.gif)
  2. I did a pick up gig recently in a small bar. Guitar to processor to P.A. I was able to get a tone I liked. The band leader even sez he'll provide your choice of processors? This is a no brainer! If you ain't doin dis you be a fool. Don't let the old farts tell you any different. Less gear to move, quicker set up, more room on stage, what's not to like?

"Oh ya gotta haz an amp!!" {censored} you ya dinosaur.

  3. I know there's a whole lotta love for teles on this board and i love them too but that is not a pretty headstock. then again, i don't think teles are meant to be pretty - they're more of a getting-the-job-done guitar. they look good in their own way

My fave Fender line: the Strat is the prom queen of the family and the Tele is it's slutty sister. We all need a good slut now and again.

  4. Today I wet sanded starting at 1000, then 1500 then 2000. Looks and feels very smooth. I'd like to put some polish on it. Recommendations?

If you've gone as far as 2000 I'd get some automotive polishing compound. Turtle Wax is as good as any. Then I'd use a good carnuba based wax. As stated, I like the KIT brand automotive paste wax.

  5. Start with 1000. Got to 1500. Then go with rubbing compound followed by polishing compound. With the polishing compound I like to use a Powerball. Then use Kit car wax. It's mostly carnuba with a light scratch remover. Just make sure you don't take it into the sunlight without shades, It WILL shine like a new dime on a goat's ass!

  6. Unfortunately we ALL learned the same way you did. When you think it's smooth enough, think again. It has to be baby ass smooth or the imperfections will show. I like to use the B.I.N. after the sand & sealer. And I sometimes will use twice as much sand and seal as I think I need. When I'm done sanding, I sand some more. Hold the thing up to the light and get the reflection on the surface. A lot of things that you thought were good will show up in that light a bit better. Or worse depending how you look at things.

  7. I anchor sometimes. It was taught as the "correct" way to do things when I was coming up. But I have a serious problem when someone says a certain technique is right or wrong. If the sound is coming out of the instrument, and I do mean ANY instrument, you're doing it right. I remember a trumpet player in high school who could blow the rest of us away with his range. "He's doing it all wrong." I say HORSESHIT!!!!! Look at my sig!

  8. I can't believe all these people defending the employees, but I also can't believe all these people who think the older gentleman was viciously robbed blind. I'm sure that people who have been on the better side of a deal might be quick to defend the employees, and people with elderly parents/grandparents quick to defend the older guy...but the facts are as follows:

-the older guy didn't care to take the time to get a second opinion or ask someone or look elsewhere for a price check

-the store employees took advantage of someone who was uninformed/misinformed.

There's blame on both sides here. Bragging about it on a public forum instead of keeping it to yourself is, besides stupid, extremely distasteful and arrogant. The good news is that as a result of that action, these employees will likely get their comeuppance in the form of a pink slip or maybe even a law suit.

Finally! Someone with a little common sense. I've been saying the same thing all along. Just not as eloquently.

  9. Goodbomb just came in here saying "Why is everyone so upset? I dont understand the moral outrage when some old guy acts like a {censored}ing moron and gets ripped off because it was entirely his fault for being a sucker". I tried to tell him that it wasnt the point, and that people were outraged at the douches who scammed him in the first place and their behaviour, yet he kept on hammering the same point "yeah but it was his own fault for being stupid!!", and didnt seem to understand that nobody gave a {censored}...

You made my point perfectly. I said the same thing as Goodbum. I just said it in an entirely different manner. Notice I didn't have the whole of HCEG trying to rip me a new one. It's when Goodbum became a total a$$hole that he really felt the heat. I see his point. I also see the point of the majority here. These scum suckers should be at least investigated to see if legal action can be taken. But I see it as a valuable lesson for those who don't yet realise that they can be swindled, conned and pissed on at any time. I'm thinking about the time when I die and my guitar collection goes to family. None of them play, so I'd like to see them get their money's worth. Is this what happened to the old man? May be. And it is his fault for not finding some way to get a proper appraisal done. But that doesn't make the actions of the scum bags right, IMO. Gumbutt not stating that fact is what raised the ire of this community.

  10. Truth be told if you know or strongly suspect someone has committed a crime
you legally have to report it to the authorities. Failure to do so can make you an accessory. Whether or not this was a crime may depend on local & state laws.

  11. Goodbomb did get a bit carried away. I myself usually proof read what I type to be sure I'm not sending out the wrong message. When someone else mis interprets I'll usually rephrase and clear things up right away. I have noticed around HC in general, people will read what they want to read and the rest goes out their butt! Yes, the old man was a fool by not doing a bit of research. And Goodbomb did become the lowest part of the digestive system. But remember the saying by P.T. Barnum? "There is a sucker born every minute."
We all have to guard against the scumbags in this world. And reporting it to the shop owner was a noble deed IMHO. Please don't condemn people who are just trying to make these points clear. At least not until he becomes an a$$hole.

  12. Goodbomb does make a valid point. It's one I don't agree with, but valid none the less. I still think the scumbags that ripped the old man off should be strung up by their testicles. But that doesn't excuse the ignorance of the old man. Fore warned is fore armed. And the old man didn't do his research. In this world you'll get taken advantage of if you don't cover your own butt. It may not be right, but that's the way of the world. That's Goodbomb's point. He only mentioned that about ten jillion times.

  13. I agree that taking advantage of someone is wrong. My father is also in his 80's and doesn't even want to know about computers or the internet. He's also wise enough to ask for assistance when needed. IF this is really what happened, no human laws were broken. Only the laws of common decency. He did step in the store and ask the value. They didn't go to him. The old man was taken advantage of and the business owner needs to be made aware of that fact. If fellow HC'ers did this, my hat's off to them. And I don't even wear a hat! I can only hope the scumbags who did the deed get what they deserve.
