well it doesn't meet your requirement of being pretty, but it does meet your requirement of being cheap. So, what is it? Egg cartons! I have heard from a few people, that this supposed urban legend actually works. I have yet to try it myself, but hey all it takes is a protein strong diet for about a year and you can see if it works lol. i dont know if you are serious or joking. egg cartons do nothing for soundproofing. it may have some acoustical advantage, but to actually stop sound... if you want to stop the sound from bleeding into other rooms take the advise of other people, and dont waste you money on a crap-load of eggs.

would something like hardiboard work better than sheetrock? its made of concrete and plastic, i think. it sure weighs a hell of a lot more than sheetrock, so it has more mass. it might be a little more expensive, too. you could do a layer of that under a layer of sheetrock.
