  1. You and I know this - Joe Public doesn't - that's my point.... What does this have to do with "Joe Public," man? This guy has owned, and probably played, these guitars since the 60s. If he's still clueless as to how it functions, then there's something very wrong.
  2. If you dont give a damn about some old guy who got scammed out of an expensive guitar, then that says a lot about you and your "moral compass", and I dont know why you got offended by the moral compass comment in the first place. I don't see where it questions my morals that I don't feel sorry for someone too stupid to tell when they're clearly being ripped off. In fact, I don't see where it says anything about myself, other than I have little sympathy for someone so clearly ignorant and disinterested in their own property. Sorry.
  3. Whether or not hes at fault is really a moot point, maybe he didnt give a rats what it was worth - 2 dudes lied to him about the value and scammed him out of a vintage guitar. Whether or not he deserved it is besides the point and doesnt excuse their behaviour at all, which is what everyone is getting up in arms about (rightfully so). If he didn't give a rat's ass, why did he take it in to get it appraised? Give me a break. Everyone is getting upset about something that, A, has zero effect on them, and B, is only made possible by someone's dimwitted approach to a situation. A new chump is born every day, and eventually it becomes hard to feel bad for them, especially when they're THIS outlandishly dimwitted. If this guy approaches everything in life this way, he must have given his credit card away to Nigerian scammers over and over, fall for every commercial on TV, and have a computer riddled with software that claims he "has a virus!" and must purchase a specific product to fix it. I'm condoning nothing of this, it's just hard to feel bad for someone who gives things away to someone who makes a living off shorting people.
  4. I could walk into an auto / bike showroom and see the latest prices of new vehicles - doesn't inform my knowledge to what my circa 1960's honda is worth....so I fail to see the connection - the poor chap was ripped off by unscrupulous scumbags, he trusted their 'expert' advice - hence him seeking it in the first place! The least he could have expected was honesty - I don't see what is so difficult about this concept? The difference is that a car is a consumer product that degrades with time. Eventually, it will become unusable. Also, a showroom will not have used or vintage cars. A guitar, on the other hand, does not become unusable from everyday wear, and even my parents, who know absolutely nothing about guitars, know that a vintage guitar is often worth more than it's new counterpart, and can tell you from watching TV that musicians are often seen playing old instruments, so clearly they do not become outdated. As well, a guitar store WILL carry used and vintage instruments. This isn't rocket science, man.
  5. I really am suprised at ANYONE supporting the OP who ripped the older gentleman off. Have societal norms really dropped that low? How would any of you feel if that was YOUR Father who was basically stolen from? Just because there are a group of 'knowledgable' folk on this forum who can spot a 'bargain' at 40 yards doesn't translate into everyone else is an idiot! Seriously pisses me off at some of the DUMBASS support for these degenerate thieves!!!! Even if the support is by way off indicating the seller was 'stupid'!!!! Really guys - get a life and some manners and decency. /rant off/ If you're suggesting I'm a "dumbass," I'm not supporting the OP's actions, in the slightest. I wouldn't do such a thing, and I don't condone it at all. However, I feel that falling for such nonsense is partially your own fault, and it's beyond me how anyone can't. If my credit card was overloaded with charges from an unscrupulous website that I myself decided to use without any recommendations or reviews, that would be partially my own fault. If I gave my bank information to some unknown Nigerian "royalty" telling me that, by doing so, I'd inherit their fortune, going along with that would be my own fault. Trusting someone that makes a living from giving people a small percentage of an item's worth and reselling it to give me an honest appraisal, and then GIVING them my property based souly on that appraisal, would be my own fault, and is incredibly dumb.
  6. When people are arguing over who was at fault regarding a dispute, then someone comes in and proclaims that one side was "{censored}ING STUPID", its not exactly a big stretch to assume that they were in favour of the other side.... I'm certainly not in favor of either here, but no one seems to think that they man who gave a vintage guitar away based on the opinion of a teenager working at a place that thrives off resales is at all to blame for his own actions.
  7. Excuse me, I assumed you had a point besides stating the obvious. There's a middle ground between "a point" and "assuming {censored}ing everything." If you can't see a point in what I've said, I think you're simply choosing to ignore anything that isn't exactly what you're saying yourself. Or what you're making up in place of what I'm actually saying.
  8. +1 Besides, not everyone knows, or even thinks that old guitars are worth stupid amount of money. Most people think that they just depreciate in value over time like almost everything else. He came in EXPECTING a considerable amount. The OP said that in the deleted post. The person came in expecting a decent amount because it was a vintage instrument. Then he asked a SALES PERSON, who's job is to resell things they've bought for next to nothing, how much it was worth. Lemme just take my car in for a trade-in and ask them how much it's worth, or go to hock shop to appraise my wedding band. I'm not saying what the OP did was right, moral, entirely legal, or not at fault. But the seller was STUPID for selling it, and there's no way around that. Who says "what's this worth, sales associate? oh, nothing? throw it away for me?"
  9. So old guy walks in and ask how much is this guitar worth? Little d-bag lies to him, but its the old guys fault? Maybe the guy is naive or maybe he is just plain dumb, but its still the little {censored}bag of {censored} that was dishonest and lied to him. No differance from that to the little old 80 year old lady that gets tricked out of giving her bank information out over the phone or gets cought up in other scams that most of us know better then to deal with. One's an out and out systematic scam, the other is an idiot believing the first person he talks to when they say "it's not worth anything" and simply GIVING them the instruments. {censored}ING. STUPID. There's no way around that.
  10. Absolutely the old guy made a mistake, but I would not have been able to live with myself if I didn't at least TRY to find him and let him know. Of course, I probably would have said, "I don't know lets take a look ...", in regard to his question about the value .... I agree. However, there are less than scrupulous people all over the place, and this is one of the lesser of those issues. I feel, with that in mind, this is more the seller's fault than the buyer.
  11. Those of you who disagree, at least thanks for letting us know about your personal concepts of honesty and integrity. Get over yourself. Someone sold someone else something for less than it was worth because they didn't take the time to do anything but ask the BUYER, who makes a living from buying things for less than they're worth and re-selling them for more than they got it for, what it was worth. I'm sorry, but who's at fault here again?
  12. I disagree - Granted, I don't know the specifics of this transaction, BUT: My Father (a man in his 80's) could not, if his life depended on it, manage to research the worth of an old guitar (or a new one). I love the man, and he aint stupid - but the technology-understanding gap is just too wide. I have tried to assist him with such things and its just a lost battle. He's also from a very different generation than me - in his day, you treated customers, and especially the elderly with respect. For ANYone to so grotesquely take advantage and knowingly misrepresent the guitars value goes WAAAY beyond bargaining, and into the realm of the truly criminal. And I would fully expect such a case to go before a judge, and the jerks who took advantage would be found guilty of a crime. I'm not suggesting your father, or anyone in that age range without the knowledge to use a computer to find the value or something they're selling, is stupid. My parents are in their early 50s, and up until fairly recently, they'd have trouble with it, too. But at the same time, they're wise enough not to sell for a price that they see unfitting. If you bring a vintage instrument into a store and they give you a few hundred for it, you should know SOMETHING is up. I feel selling it for that price is your own fault. I've had some pretty stupid offers made to me on things I was selling, and those offering were surely hoping I myself would be stupid enough to say yes, and if I were, I'd have no one to blame but myself.
  13. What theft? The old guy gave them away! There is no story here. I kind of feel the same way. If you don't know the value of things, don't sell them. It's not difficult with forums like this, Ebay completed items, etc, to find the value or an item. And expecting morality and fairness from a place that's going to re-sell your item to another person is moronic. My friend took his guitar and amp to GC for trade-in and was offered $75 for the guitar, and somewhere around $50 for the amp, if they even would take it. He sold them both on Craigslist a few days later for $800. My old guitar teacher has a 60s Gretsch he got for $300 from a classified ad. He found an ad that read "gretch guitar," went to the house, and checked it out. It was an elderly woman selling it, it had been her husband's, and he had passed away. Perfect condition, worth probably 10x what she was asking. He took a few minutes to debate and told her, flat out, she could make a small fortune if she sold it to someone else. She said, "it was my husband's and he's gone, get it out of my house." $300 and he's got one of the nicest guitars I've ever seen or played.
  14. It looks like a beat-up Melody Maker. How much could they have possibly ripped the dude off for on it?
  15. I dunno, I typically list things for more on eBay to account for the ridiculous fees. Very true, but so does everyone. Most people want more than any online store on Craigslist, unless they're ill-informed or just don't care.
  16. As others have said, Ebay completed listings. Also, use the reviews section here and look at used prices. Use www.searchtempest.com and do a global Craigslist search, see how much they're running for. You can generally get $50 or so more on Craigslist than Ebay simply because they don't have to deal with paying for shipping or the wait and can see it in person. Selling for LESS than Ebay on Craigslist on hurts you.
  17. Looking for a faded brown gibson explorer. From the serial number lookup: pics: Hey man. Just offering some advice. I hope it's helpful. In the spam thread, don't use the "title" section of posts to put up information. The text is too small and will generally be overlooked. And post a large pic or two and then links to smaller ones. With the trade request in the title section, it'll get looked over and people will just assume you're selling the Les Paul. And since it has no price (because it's not for sale, it's for trade), it'll generally be overlooked all together.
  18. Epiphone Dot Studio. Like new, barely ever played at all. GFS Dream 180s installed. I'll try to get my own pics very soon if anyone is interested. PM me if you are. I'm thinking $250 SHIPPED OBO.
  19. Saying "epic fail" outloud is even worse. Use the meme all you want online, but {censored}, saying them outside is almost worse than shouting "lolz" when you think something is funny.
  20. So now we can tell people what words are fit for them to use to because we think they aren't cool... Awesome While I get what you're saying, I hear "fail" so often from the most obnoxious of people, clinging to an internet meme that has been around for years and they discovered last week, that I get sick of it, too.
  21. Heavy bands (hardcore/metal bands) dulling down their vocals for generic nu-metal psuedo-singing and digestible instrumentation as soon as the band gets signed to a major label and played on the radio.
  22. I am in need of cash, so I'm selling the Epi Firebird I purchased from Vidiot here on the forums. It's been repainted, as you can see, it was black and the "wings" were sanded down and refinished to the natural finish, the center section and edges (sides) kept black. The pickups are GFS Minihumbuckers. Bolt-on neck model. No case, but I can include a gig bag if you'd like and a ship very securely. $250 plus shipping, about $35 continental US. PM me if interested. Please, no tire kickers. If you can't afford it or have no real interest, don't bother. No trades needed right now, thank you. No shipping outside of the continental US unless you're willing to pay the added shipping. I don't mean to be rude, just need to be direct. Basically, pay for what you purchase and serious inquiries only.
  23. Older model, lemon drop, not sold anymore. Great guitar, just GREAT, all quality hardware (same stuff you'd get from the guitarfetish site, including the pickups). I just have too many LP style guitars, and I'm considering something else. On the left. 2nd from right. On the right. No problems, no wear, no mods. 200 and shipping (I'll ship whatever service you like to save you cash).
  24. Well, I meant a boost pedal, actually. I think the so-called rhythm channel on a 5150 is pretty usable for your main overdrive tone. Anyway, did you try the GFS lipstick HB in your Hodad? People here really like them. I never really use the rhythm channel. Really seems to be lacking something, even for what it is. Nah, I never really messed with my 6/12 (not a Hodad, actually), except for re-assembling it when I got it (got it from a guy off the telemodders forum for 160 bucks, just needed the necks reattached and set up). The lipstick HB I tried was in a Hodad, wasn't into it for what I play. A guy I know played one in a indie/post-hardcore band and I really disliked it there, too... didn't cut through at all.
  25. Add some gain. You can get pretty heavy with lipsticks, or pickups that have a similar outpit. LAKINI'S JUICE by Live is played on a Fender Jag or Jazz, both of which have pretty low output pickups. Nothing light about that tone. I played a Mustang recently that I loved, but when played through an amp similar to mine... I just couldn't get much I liked out of it, atleast not for what I play. If I was playing in a different kind of band, I'd definitely be into it, but for what I play now... Not so much. And the gain on my Orange is always dimed, and the 5150... well, it's got too much gain when it's unplugged.
