  1. Ah! I seldom visit the place - I get too angry.
  2. Yes, I'd agree with Daddymack - the Yamaha FG800 is an excellent budget guitar. HST, although the first Fender acoustics were not very good they have sorted all the QC problems and their current instruments are much better. Enjoy the journey.
  3. Perhaps Deepend and I may have something to offer sometime . . . . . But for now - best wishes.
  4. I agree. I use a small 40 watt bass amp regularly. I also have a larger 50 watt keyboard amp that I use in big venues - keyboard amps also work well with acoustic guitars.
  5. Yeah. It's getting colder here in the UK too. We had a few nights of -6C a couple of weeks ago - not very cold by Canadian standards, I know (we know some people who lived in Calgary for several years where the cold is brutal. Why do people live there?!?!) - but cold for the UK. And yes, let it acclimatize for a while. If it suits you playing style leave it as it is. Enjoy.
  6. A good choice, Misha. I've played a Yamaha FG800 and thought it was an excellent guitar. Looking at the photos, the action at the 12th fret seems a little higher than it should be. There is plenty of height on the saddle to lower it more if you want a lower action.
  7. Hello Misha - and welcome back - so sorry for your loss. Alas it is very quiet here these days so it's good to see people returning. Those old Cort Earth guitars are excellent instruments so I think it is worth getting it fixed. As has been said, it is probably the rising bridge that is causing the high action (the bridge pins will definitely not be the problem) and reglueing the bridge is not a big or difficult job so it should not be too expensive. After fixing the bridge it should be possible to set up the guitar so it plays well - from the photos there seems to be enough height on the saddle to lower it if necessary to improve the action. Bonne chance!
  8. I've not heard of them. I've had a quick look and their range is very similar to other makers.
  9. Thanks, David. I hadn't heard the Paul Brady version - it was the version by Planxty (long ago) that had me hooked on the song. It's been covered by lots of people over the years including Mr Dylan (hmmmm!).
  10. Good stuff, Deep. Here is one from me. A traditional song from the USA set towards the end of or just after the civil war. The Lakes of Pontchartrain https://app.box.com/s/tgjudjk35134ig8nsl576y329jgjtmgs
  11. Excellent song and performance, David. Good to see you in action.
  12. Congratulations. Tanglewood guitars are very good instruments - I've never played a poor one. It's a UK company that started out in the late 80's with instruments designed and Qced in the UK but made in Korea (I believe by Cort). Look out for some of the early models: Earth 100, 200, 500. Absolutely amazing guitars for the price.
  13. I play probably 85% nylon strings these days. It wasn't alweays so: although my first guitar was a classical I bought a steel string a couple of years later and played that (and other steel string guitars I accumulated) most of the time. I began the switch back to nylon about 6 or 7 years ago and have never regretted it. I did once own a Yamaha APX-6NA crossover but sold it on after a year or so - it just didn't have the tone of a true classical. And (LOL) I took the same decision last year about not buying another git without selling another - keeping to it so far.
  14. I now have five classical guitars. Nylon rules.
  15. Go to a good music store - several if you can - and play as many guitars as you can within your budget. Pick the one that you like best irrespective of the name on the headstock.
  16. Congratulations. Very nice old guitar. I'm tempted to quote the old adage "they don't make them like that anymore" which is probably not true but getting there.
  17. I'm saving it for a rainy day.
  18. It's pretty dead here to be sure, Glenn. But, alas, the same can be said of most "real" music forums. I pop in regularly in the hope of some resurrection - maybe one day?
  19. I'm doing my best, Gibson. Alas, most music forums are severely in decline: young people these days think that "music" comes out of a phone. Here in the UK, March has been one of the wettest on record (and we had 6 inches of snow early in the month). But "hope springs eternal" and my garden is beginning to bloom.
  20. Joseph333 and BriFi Despite what the article in the newspaper says I think they were almost certainly made by Suzuki Nagoya (as BriFi would wager - I agree 100%).

  22. Ho hum. That's been pretty much my experience of Martin. So I never bought one.
