  2. I’m told from time to time to play something more upbeat as a solo acoustic act. Wondering what this means? Uplifting or something faster? I play the same material with a drummer in a duo and never get asked to play something more upbeat even if we are playing slow depressing songs.
  3. Email, Phone Call, In Person, Facebook Message, other? I've been playing music for my living since last year. Been difficult trying to stay booked. I've had best luck with Facebook Messages and email behind it. Phone calls are almost always a miss for me. In person doesn't usually work because I playing gigs 60+ miles from my home.
  4. Buy this book: http://amzn.to/2CGN2Cz and thank me later. I ran into the same as you. I now do all of my own setup work. I leave frets and bigger jobs to pros. I live near Nashville so I have quite a few to choose from that some of the bigger industry players use.
  5. I have been playing in bars since I was just out of High School. I am starting to wonder if part of the reason I don't get rebooked is because I am not spending my guarantee back on drinks and/or accepting drinks from patrons? I treat performing like a business and even if I was a drinker, I wouldn't drink while working at a day job.
  6. To add more information. "Club A" is a beer bar and "Club B" is a restaurant with a full bar. I figured they were different enough to not cause any issues. If they were both restaurants or both beer bars, then yeah, I can see where he's coming from. I am not going to lose any sleep if I lose the "Club A" venue to play at though.
  7. I was curious what people thought of this situation. I live in a small town where there is only a few places for musicians to play. I am currently working as a musician and I am playing in and out of town. I booked a show at "club a" about a month ago for this Friday night. I approached "club b" in the same town today about a future booking and they offered me a gig this Thursday. I took the gig. Then about 20 minutes later after I post the gig on social media, the owner of "club a" tells me he is not happy that I booked a gig in the same town the night before I play at his place. I was wondering if I was right in booking since this is what I am doing for a living and I have to take gigs as they come. Or is "club a" right in thinking I will take business from him by playing the night before in the same town? I explained to the owner that I am working as a musician for a living and offered to cancel the gig at "club b" just to make it right. Not to mention, "club b" is a better paying gig and more often. "Club a" is a lower paying gig that is less often and a pain to book. The owner also mentions that I need to bring a crowd, while "club b" doesn't care if I play to an empty room.
  8. I am a singing guitarist that is struggling with live sound. I have used the Bose L1 systems (model 2, compact) in the past, but in a few venues I had a hard time hearing myself over a loud crowd. I play mostly in restaurants and bars. I am currently using a pair of QSC K10 powered speakers and an Allen & Heath Zed10fx. I haven't really been in love with this setup since I got it. I usually bring one speaker out to gigs and it set up offset behind me on a stand. I've been considering putting the speaker in front of me and setting up a monitor to improve my monitoring and FOH volume. I feel like I am already bringing too much gear to shows where I have to set up in a corner. I have been reading about the various line array type systems on the market lately and keep coming back to the Bose. Also I live in between Knoxville and Nashville and it seems like every acoustic group is using a Bose setup. Looking for advice to help me decide if I should expand my current setup or sell it and buy another Bose.

  14. I have been playing solo acoustic shows for the last 7 years. I am wanting to know how others deal with requested songs at gigs? I have about 150 songs consisting of mostly pop rock and a handful of country tunes. I always get the most obscure songs requested and when I say I don't know it, the person gets offended and walks away. The sad thing is, I truly don't know the song they are requested or it is something I am familiar with, but not able to sing with my limited vocal range. I was bringing song lists to gigs for a while and that seemed to help, but wondering how everyone else handles it.
