  • OOGFEST 2014 WORKSHOP GIVES RISE TO MOOG'S NEW ONLINE MUSIC & ELECTRONICS LEARNING PORTAL

    By HC News |

Asheville, North Carolina • October 9, 2014 — Moogfest 2014 catapulted a myriad of ideas into the worlds of music, science and technology. As of yesterday, some of those innovations are now available online to educators, synthesists, hackers and the technologically curious. WerkstattWorkshop.com, Moog Music's newly announced online music and tech learning portal, is based around the Werkstatt-01 Analog Synthesizer Moogfest 2014 Kit, which Moog designed specifically to inspire the exploration and manipulation of analog circuits, thereby creating a platform to creatively teach science, technology, math and music, as well as a community and resources to enrich it.

“Analog synthesizers have long had their own maker culture born of curious engineers, musicians, and hobbyists alike,” said Moog Music CEO, Mike Adams. “Bob Moog got his start at the age of 15 by studying and modifying Leon Theremin’s designs. We’d like to share our legacy of learning, music and electronics to empower a new generation of makers.”

Werkstattworkshop.com (beta) brings together video tutorials for nine modifications, none of which require soldering, that span simple photo cell resistor integration to Arduino microprocessor control. The site also houses project ideas, 3D printer files and 38 complete lesson plans for educators to expand STEM and STEAM programs in high school classrooms. The materials are open source and available free of charge.

Earlier this week, Moog Music announced the world wide release of Werkstatt-01 Analog Synthesizer Moogfest 2014 Kit. To support this analog circuit exploration kit, Moog has partnered with SparkFun, a celebrated online electronics store that makes the world of technology more accessible to the average person. Sparkfun will distribute all of the parts needed to create the modifications found on Werkstattworkshop.com(beta).

"The Moog Werkstatt is an awesome piece of technology that has a huge range of appeal to musicians in the DIY electronics sphere," said SparkFun Engineer Byron Jacquot. "SparkFun has a deep respect for Moog's legacy and we're excited about this new partnership and the possibilities that it holds."

In April 2014, the Werkstatt-01 Analog Synthesizer Kit was provided to Engineering VIP ticket holders through an exclusive workshop at Moogfest 2014, Moog's multi-day celebration of technology, art, and music. Moog Music has embraced this opportunity to bring its synthesizers to a new generation through its online portal WerkstattWorkshop.com (beta).
