Sampling the heck out of a handsome handmade mountain dulcimer with a sweet, beautiful, and inviting tone, Embertone effectively jumped down the rabbit hole, risking total insanity to produce an intuitive, versatile, inspiring, and, ultimately, useful compositional tool that, in some senses, sounds even better than the real thing to (partly) paraphrase the 1992 global smash hit single from Irish stadium rockers U2 — no strangers themselves to incorporating influences from many musical genres. Based on a 1940’s mandolin originally owned by a US Serviceman who fought at and survived the Omaha beach landings The Gordon Giltrap Vintage ‘D-Day Mandolin’ (VPM44 £249 UK rrp) has been faithfully reproduced by Vintage® as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made over 70 years ago by those remarkable servicemen and women, and the importance of musical instruments in raising morale during wartime conflict.

Featuring a white ash body, with Nyatoh neck and Indonesian Rosewood fingerboard, including aged hardware as a ‘nod’ to the original, and displaying replicas of some of the original hard-carved inscriptions made by the owner and his fellow soldiers, the D-Day Mandolin is tonally responsive and very easy to play. Supplied with a zero gravity carry case, the D-Day Mandolin was the brainchild of Gordon Giltrap, whom along with his wife Hilary was able to uncover the amazing story behind this remarkable instrument and its origins.

Pilgrim designer, luthier and celebrated musician Paul Tebbutt is no stranger to what makes a truly great banjo.

With an extensive ‘reference library’ of vintage instruments Pauls latest quest for the Pilgrim brand has been to accurately reproduce the distinctive and elusive benchmark tone of the “Tubaphone” tone ring banjos of the 1920’s.

“Many companies have attempted to replicate this iconic tonality,” explains Paul “and whilst the instruments might have looked the part, the tone rings used just didn’t sound anything like the original banjos! Back in the early eighties we developed a 'Tubaphone style’ tone ring with bell foundry in Leicester which were very highly regarded and came very close to the sound I was trying to achieve”.

Fast forward to 2015 and the brand new Pilgrim Morning Star range features four distinct models that combine classic looks, with fine tone woods and premium hardware. Most importantly, utilising new technologies this new range features a uniquely dimensioned bell brass tubular section “Morning Star Tone Ring” developed by Paul to accurately recreate that much sought after clarity, projection and tonal purity.
