  8. There is no such thing as having too much or too little of effects or pedals .... It's all dependent on the player or the musical situation. I used a M.I.D.I.'fied effects chain, but no matter what, I 've yet to find a digital Flanger that sound as good as an Electro Harmonix Electric Mistress Flanger Deluxe.

  14. and the saga CONTINUES....................... FEB 20 A very bad day today. I started with the realization that my MFX3 boot disk was stopping randomly. It was real tight and tangled in the MFX3 case so I moved it to it's own powered case. Then I recorded a few tracks. Then it started acting up again. Decided that I would try one of the other disk drives......THEY SQUEAKED AND CLICKED. Not good. Then I decided to format one of my new drives (even though it was 200 gb) to make it a bootable disk. The Exabyte tape got a bit chewed up ....and wouldn't completely copy the system. !! BAD DAY ! Now I'm thinking of formatting the Video Recorder drive. FEB 21 I'm rebuilding a power supply. I took A LOOK AT the original power supply (not from the Fairlight but from the Fairlight SCSI BOX) It was rusted inside and looked unrecoverable. I had already pulled it out a few weeks ago, and replaced with a computer power ATX supply with green and black shorted (so it would run without a computer) Apparently the ATX was a bit wonky. I have it opened now and I'm replacing 3 caps which are swollen. So after that, we will try with the original drive again. (but I also screwed up config file by changing the name.) Anyway I'm not giving up yet. VIVID is more or less just a conversation piece today. It is not HD . FEB 23 OOPS ! WIPED OUT THE KEYBOARD Did you know what I learned from this ? The MFX3 console CAN be programmed for CMI. Yes I screwed this up good. I messed with the network config file , changing the IP address, and learned that BOTH files had to be the same. But I can't edit the hosts.conf because I also read that I might need change the keyboard to match various versions of MFX3 software so screwed with that as well. So now if I edit a config , I can't save it because the BLUE button doesn't work. I have been trying to run "mfxload" but it won't run. I even went to the USR/CMDS folder to run it and then I get this stupid -J error. But it is clear that I must get mfxload to run FIRST. Or if I get in with ethernet and my laptop ?...but wait the NETWORK IS MESSED UP because of the "host" file. FEB 27 Keyboard back now version 15.9. Network I'm not sure but mfx3 loads. All drives are external now. Things still flakey. At least it loads. I have to play with the cables and Terminator. Deleted nvram/setup to get back control. FEB 28 I guess that I have to mark IN and OUT on the drive enclosures. Also can these PCI SCSI adapters be replaced with ADAPTEC types? Just to get this straight (been a long time since my Amiga days) There should be a terminating JUMPER on the PCI SCSI INTERFACE and a terminating RESISTOR PACK AT THE END OF THE CHAIN. Must they be in numerical order? My scsi devices are 0 boot and 1 and 2 MAR 1 i'M beginning to think it is a SCSI termination issue. On my 80pin to 50 pin adapter I have the following jumpers. (besides scsi channel) 1. TPR Termination Power. 2. DLY Start Delay 3. REM RMT Start 4. LED LED. 5. SNC Synchronous. 6. SNC Synchronous. Used as a wire harness connection for a remote reference index signal for the spindle sync. feature. The method of starting the drive motor is established by DLY & RMT signals. DLY RMT Description MAR 2 I will jumper TPR on the last scsi adapter and connect the terminator there. If that doesn't fix the flakeyness I'll get the Granite Digital GOLD SCSI 50-Pin External Active Terminator. It does make a difference using that powered Terminator, but still having hiccups. I was reading at another forum that I'm expecting TOO MUCH to try and get TWO drives running together with those adapters so I will only try ONE of those funky drives tomorrow. MAR 8 Even with the Granite Digital GOLD SCSI 50-Pin External Active Terminator ,ONE DRIVE DIDN’T MAKE A DIFFERENCE. I’m beginning to suspect overheating now. MAR 9 I have replaced the HEART of my MFX3 and we will see what happens next. Not only did the previous owner give me 2 complete MFX3, but also a brand new motherboard/video combo as well. I couldn't get the video to work at all with the new motherboard (maybe too high hz?) so I plugged in an older CGA. It is working fine, but now the next test is of a 3 hour session with no hiccups....and I will have a big fan blowing on the system as well, to prevent overheating, just in case. MARCH 10 SUCCESS ….3 Hours And 15 Minutes No Hiccups !! AND EVERYTHING WAS RECORDED @44.1KHZ 24 BIT DAN

  15. Actually, now that I think about it, I'd just like to play guitar as well now as I did in the 60s. Back then I never went a day without playing for at least an hour, learning a song, amusing myself with some old songs, working out an arrangement. But today I can go a month without picking up an instrument, and, boy, when I go to a jam like I did this afternoon, it really shows. There are certain fundamental things about playing backup that I haven't lost, but my finger style has totally gone to pot, and I can no longer flat pick a tune like Doc and I used to, not even slowly to teach it to a fiddler. It's not just my imagingation. I have some tapes to prove that I used to be pretty darn good. But. honestly, I'm just not inspired to play every day any more. Like with everything else that you used to do in your 20s and 30s - time changes everything.

  17. I hadn't heard it either until just a few days ago. I've honestly always heard bad things about it but I think it sounds killer! Its got 3 modes, Fuzz Face, Maestro and Octavia. I want to do a demo of it here soon but work has been really busy lately. Maybe Sunday I can get some clips up.

  18. Unless you're in West Africa, anyhow. I do have a friend who plays the kora and has appeared with at least one touring African player when he came to LA. Here's a nice bit from 3MA, a cross-cultural group with kora player, Ballalké Sissoko (who's played with Toumani Diabaté), oud-player Driss El Maloumi, and valiha (a sort of tubular harp) player, Rajery (who lost the fingers on his right hand before the age of one). [music starts at 30 seconds; followed by a long interview in French with what looks like Dutch subtitles, and about a minute and a half of music at the end] [video=youtube_share;VFuLaiwdTRk] Good to see you guys!

  19. It's a custom Bradshaw pedalboard [http://www.customaudioelectronics.com/bradshaw_legacy] that allows all sorts of ways to interconnect pedals. Think "pedalboard Keymaster". It is so big that by the time he got it populated with pedals he couldn't move it LOL! I'll see if I can get a pic.

  24. Yes it is. There's been a few minor changes since that photo was taken, and I have a ton of other pedals that aren't mounted on any board, but for the most part, it's all still pretty similar to what's in that photo. How's that Volto working out for you?
